I chose my varsity jacket. I have a letterman jacket for choir/theatre (performing arts) and have received countless criticisms for this. Commonly accepted knowledge of varsity jackets is that only athletes should have the ability to receive them. This is why many people do not like the fact that my varsity letter was granted for an activity other than a sport. They believe performing arts does not require the same amount of effort as a sport and does not inhibit the same important factors and elements. I would have to disagree. Students are recognized with varsity letters when they have completed a significant amount of time in an activity that embodies hard work, dedication, team collaboration, chances for personal betterment, and vast areas of learning to grow in. For me and many others, theatre and choir provide just this.

In theatre and choir, hard work is essential. As an individual in a musical, you must work diligently to memorize your lines, cues, musical parts, dances, and blocking. This takes time and extreme dedication. It is not an easy task. This knowledge is personal to me, but in many ways these things can be shared knowledge. Lines are often between two or more people. Musical parts are usually shared between a group of people. Dances involve a large group of people, and everyone needs to be in sync. Blocking can involve others as well. This aspect of hard work and dedication as well as the elements of shared knowledge are factors that exist in both athletes and thespians.

Team collaboration must be present in the varsity recognized activity. In choir, a group must work together to decipher a sight reading passage. In theatre, a group works to practice and perfect dances and musical parts. Groups work together to rehearse lines and scenes. Groups work together to design and create the entire set for the play/musical. Theatre and choir require immense amounts of group collaboration.

Finally, the activity should allow for personal betterment and learning. In theatre and choir, students are always looking to grow. You want to know your musical part/lines/blocking/dances like the back of your hand. You want to design beautiful lighting, a breathtaking set, and mesmerizing sound. This all takes the hard work and dedication discussed above. Finally, there are so many areas to learn about in theatre and choir. Choir incorporates all of music theory and the elements of proper singing. Theatre stems from smooth and effortless to performing, to the entire world of tech.

As a whole, while it is common knowledge that only athletes should be able to receive varsity jackets, the requirements are actually shared in other activities. Hard work, dedication, opportunities for collaboration, ways to personally better yourself, and new aspects to learn, are all elements present in sports AND activities like performing arts.
