The main take away I gathered from viewing other classmates videos and articles is that 21st century skills are a necessary must for any educational setting. I was familiar with all of the programs that were mentioned to support instructional design. I enjoyed reading and listening to classmates ideas on how to implement these tools in the classroom.

Instructional design tools not only promote a positive 21st century learning environment, but they also allow the students to interact in a way that keeps them actively engaged in their learning. I want to create a positive and engaging learning environment that will intrinsically motivate my students. They can apply their own creativity to project based activities that I will use to support my innovations. I also want to promote a student centered classroom in which the teacher facilitates learning through open ended questions that allow a variety of answers. I know I am currently applying some of these strategies without the use of technology but hope that I can integrate these strategies much more effectively with the use of technology in the near future.

We now have many different forms of technology that are incorporated into life as we know it. Mastery of current technology is vital for success in this fast paced world. Children are savvy in use of computers, cell phones, devices, etc. Traditional learning is difficult to blend into a differentiated classroom that is student driven with technology being a huge part of the curriculum. The “shift” has gradually started and it is changing the way in which we must educate our students.

Technology paves the way for all students to be successful in their own right. It bridges the gap between the expectations being the same for all. Students are given the ability to choose and navigate through their own learning. Discovery activities provide students with real-world, problem-solving experiences, and overall ownership in their learning (Blair, 2012). A curriculum that integrates technology and promotes creativity will build strong successful students that know how to survive this ever changing world.

The instructional tools mentioned are not a fit for the "traditional" classroom. A plan must be in order for these tools to really be successful for both student and teacher. Project based learning serves an active role when using instructional design tools. These are activities that encourage the students to inquire and create in a way that cannot simply be completed within one class period. These are activities that bridge together a variety of skills. I was really impressed with some of the lesson plans that included simulation and gaming. I am such a huge advocate for 21st century skills in the classroom. The simulation activities keep students actively learning and engaged as they participate in these 21st century activities.

Instructional design tools are cross curricular and fitting of all age groups. As i viewed classmates videos, I became aware of how different the age levels are for most of us. We have everything from early childhood, high school teachers, to physical education teachers. This is also what makes instructional design tools so powerful for an educator. A kindergartner can participate in the creation of a Youtube video in the same fashion a high school student can perform. Yes they are learning two completely different things but the overall concept of utilizing the program and strengthening those 21st century skills are forever the same.
