One such restorative justice initiative is circle sentencing. Its goals are to identify the needs of victims, secure community engagement, and determine the offender's rehabilitative needs. It is part of and substitutes sentencing in the formal court system, unlike many other restorative projects. It involves the community and the formal justice system as partners in the resolution of criminal justice-related problems, as well as victims and offenders to a lesser extent. Circle sentencing was first utilised in criminal trials to address the unique conditions of Aboriginal offenders, but it is now also employed for non-Aboriginal offenders. The procedure is suitable for both adults and juvenile offenders, and it is adequately adaptable to other scenarios, such as child welfare conflicts. Many of the characteristics of family group conferencing, as developed in Australia and New Zealand, are present in circle sentencing, but it avoids many of the critiques levelled against restorative justice programmes.
