         <title>Population of Tyrannosaurus Rexes</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Researchers at the University of California Berkeley have found that approximately 20,000 Tyrannosaurus Rexes would have walked the surface of the Earth at any one time, with a total of 2.5 Billion Tyrannosaurus Rexes being in existence over the course of the species’ 2.5 million reign on this planet.&nbsp;<br><br>By using a formula called Demuth’s Law, which uses pre-existing information about a species, like body mass, to find an accurate prediction of its population, researchers were able to uncover the truth of the population of this fascinating species.&nbsp;<br><br>Research like this can give us a peek into the mysteries of the past to provide us with a deeper understanding of how ancient organisms thrived in their prehistoric world.<br><br>I chose this topic because I find the prehistoric times a very interesting period of Earth's history. Earth back then was full of plant and animal life, in numbers much larger than the present day. Finding out about this time period is very difficult so when we do obtain some information about it, especially about a species that many people are familiar with, it helps us analyze the past.<br><br>Now that there is an accurate prediction of the population of Tyrannosaurus Rexes, how do you think this research can help us to piece together the past?</div>]]></description>

         <title>Radioactivity of American Honey</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Recent testing by scientists has shown that traces of fallout from the Cold War era have been detected in American honey. Plants sometimes mistake Cesium-137, a radioactive isotope, as potassium, which makes plants in less potassium concentrated soils to be more radioactive.&nbsp;<br><br>While the amount of radioactivity detected in the honey is not enough to be a threat to us, the fallout could be harming insect populations such as bees. However, it is still interesting to see the effects of nuclear testing from more than 60 years ago being present in a food that we consume.&nbsp;<br><br>These types of research and testing can help us identify problems related to nuclear fallout and provide us with information to try and fix them.<br><br>I chose this topic because it explores the effects of war and nuclear testing. It is important for us to look at the past and see how we can fix the mistakes that have already happened.<br><br>If honey, a common food, has found signs of radioactivity in it, how much farther do you think the effects of the Cold War nuclear testing have gone within our food industries?</div>]]></description>

         <title>Interstellar Species</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>An article imagines what it would be like to actually meet interstellar species/aliens along with the work required to do so. So far, humanity has been trying to get into contact with interstellar species for almost a century now. We have been trying to send out radio waves hoping that aliens might pick up on it. Even though we put some of our money into trying to discover alien species, no one has a protocol in case aliens were to actually invade our planet.</div><div><br></div><div>But, we aren’t completely in the dark, humanity has made a few very interesting discoveries. The first interstellar object that we discovered was what seemed to be a rock that entered our solar system. Its attributes were too unexpected to be called something like a comet. This rock called Oumuamua was likely to just be the remains of a disintegrated rogue comet flying by. Scientists say that this was most likely just a natural object. But if it was an alien spacecraft, it is probably out of commission/non-functional since it took about 10 000 years for it to traverse our solar system.</div><div><br></div><div>Something smaller that we discovered was other gravitational waves coming from other areas in space. This was after the National Science Foundation invested $1.1 billion into the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory. People hope that if we were to invest more money into observatories we can make even greater discoveries. On the other hand, we can stay ignorant, waiting for interstellar species to come to us first and we’ll decide what to do then.<br><br>I wanted to talk about this topic because aliens are something that's not commonly thought about. As we know pretty much nothing about them, so it's fun to imagine what it would be like.</div><div><br></div><div>Should we invest more in finding interstellar species or invest more in other human necessities? Explain why you chose your answer.</div><div><br><br></div>]]></description>

         <title>Lactate-Powered Biofuel Cell</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>This article is about a team of scientists from the Tokyo University of Science in Japan, they tried to create energy by using your sweat to power wearable electronic devices for health. These people were led by Associate Professor Isao Shitanda who is very experienced in the science field of electricity and chemistry. They wanted a way to create energy for portable health monitors without having to stop and recharge something midway. They tried to create energy through chemical reactions with lactate, a molecule inside human sweat. After a lot of time and effort, they created their own biofuel cell design. They tested this design by having someone use it and have it send signals to a phone. This phone displayed the energy it was producing, which was 3.66 volts and an output power of 4.3 megawatts. Even though this may not seem like a lot, this design had already dramatically exceeded the amount of energy older designs could produce.&nbsp;</div><div><br></div><div>A biofuel cell looks like a massively oversized bandage, it will stick to your arm or forearm and try to absorb your sweat. It absorbs the lactate using the capillary effect to transport the lactate to every part of the cell simultaneously. The capillary effect is about liquids making contact with something like paper and spreading throughout the paper. Then, the biofuel cell creates chemical reactions to create energy. This energy is then transported to the electronic health monitoring device. The design is also easily fabricated with screen printing because of the materials that are in it. Screen printing is when someone forces ink or metal through a silkscreen to create something. One of the qualities that make this possible is replacing silver wires with porous carbon ink, which are paths for electricity to follow. Overall, what these scientists have created was a success. They hope that future designs and ideas will lead this to power stronger electronics.<br><br>I ended up choosing this topic because I found it interesting that over time, we are able to create newer technology that takes up less space. So, I wanted to see how this technology was made since it took up almost no space.</div><div><br>What design would you want to improve and how would you make it better?</div>]]></description>
