Personally, especially in education issues, I am in favor of sharing the materials created under the BY-SA or BY-NC-SA license, but I fully understand that there are people who, after making great efforts and working for months or years in the creation of some quality materials prefer to market them with economic benefit under the copyright license. This could be extrapolated to pharmaceutical companies and their investments in medicines.

I think it’s important and also ethic to license every work, because it’s someone’s creation. Therefor, it is normal to give credit to the person who creates this work. In my opinion there are cases where copyright it’s required. If someone doesn’t have a job, but creates things that he can sell, it’s normal to get paid for it. However, if a particular creation could save lives, a combined solution might be found, such as a product/work license and voluntary contribution/fees. In education, it is very important to learn using good –practice examples, to share and exchange materials and ideas for the benefit of our students, our society and that will be of benefit to us as human beings too.

In my opinion, and in a perfect world, every discovery should be free for all; but in the real world, to obtain results, the pharmaceutical industries spend a lot of money and they need to make a profit, as well all the other kind of industries. Is Life patentble? Fortunately not yet, but the maintenance of life requires a price; governments can and must do their part, especially for the less well-off, but who discovers something has the right to make a profit, better if limited in time. Regarding copyrights for DNA I'm think that is possible to patent a process but not the results of the process - patent CRISPR but not the plant or animal improved with this tecnique. To conclude, are not easy questions for easy answers.

Mmm... it is a tricky question. Researching is not always a synonym of success, but it requires an extraordinary amount of time, money and resources. After that, you might get a result, which even it may not be profitable.

So, it makes sense to protect the work done by others, who put at risk their own effort.

Another debate is if it would be convenient to make public the formulae, conclusions or results of a research if that was benefitial for the mankind. I think that those results should be public, especially in the medicine field. This would cause a tremendous conflict of interests, but what is first? Mankind or profits?

Well, creating a lesson for self use and sharing it with fellow teachers (most of us at some point have used lesson plans, templates, resources to enhance the quality of our lessons) should not involve any copyrighting issues.

However, if one has money on his mind, that might change one's outlook toward licencing, and/or as mentioned by a few in this group about having had to put in a lot of hours to create a resource, one might be tempted to copy right his/her creation.

I think this is an open question with no definite answer. It really depends on a various factors.

Also every plan doesn’t work with every teacher or every student, I think they are private. I can share my ideas about teaching with colleagues but when I share my detailed lesson plan I observe that it is not working same with on them but I know education is something social and develop by sharing. For me teacher’s experiences or ideas about teaching is more useful than reading an article about education. I would say sharing is caring for all these situations, as this is the best way for us, educators, to help each other. However it is up to the owner whether they are willing to launch their work via the Intrnet without getting any reward for it, or claim some benefit for sharing the work they produced. I believe that regarding sensitive data, there should be specific restrictions according to the use of the data and the users. In terms of education resources, for the accredited educators, they should be free to use in class. Scientific papers could be free after a certain period of time and to registered educators. In my opinion, licenses are very important for the authors grant copyrights of their original work. Licenses also provide clear regulations for future use of the work. This is a good question! A few years ago I read the Capua's (italian woman reasearcher) book: " i virus non aspettano" (the viruses don't wait).The autor underlines the important aspect of free sharing of the results of scientific research for the humanity's health. I completely agree with her and also I don't understand why most of scientific findings are private or why we have to pay for having got them. As in many topics I think that equilibrium is needed.
We should be carefull allowing licenses about natural resources. Nobody should own a part of the nature in a restrictive way for others (genes etc). However, we should take into account the effort made by many initiatives (public or private) that had invested and need to earn back in order to go on.
How could I go on creating teaching resources if nobody pays me for my professional work? Specially in minority languages, I learned that we need investment from public and private sectors. Of course, all productions are aimed to be used by every citicen.

There must be good sense and balance. There should be no use licenses on goods such as water, sun, wind, plants, seeds etc.

The same thing for words. It is strange that a company or someone can hold possession of a word that is used by people on a daily basis only because they have decided to pay to be "the owner" of that word.

Copyright laws are incredibly complex. When we create something — let’s say a photograph — we own the copyright, which is our exclusive right as the author to own that work. We control who else can use our work and in what manner. Rather than establishing verbal agreements, I can distribute my work with a license that sets the guidelines for use. So, if I'm living from my "intellectual work" I would say that it's important to pay to reuse it. But if I made it for my students and I share it with my colleagues I wouldn't ask for any payment for reusing it because it's a part of my work for which I'm getting paid. :)

Actually, I see that the biggest part of respondents agree that the labor should be respected, that the work of anyone should be used with the approval of the author, that the bibliography and webographie should be recognized (otherwise the plagiat would become a normality) and also that everyone should be aware about what they publish and about what they use (as a trustful source of information).

But on the other hand I am aware about the inspirational educational sources and their shared importance, so that I believe that it couldn't be a general and definitive sentence about the topic you proposed. It depends of the context.

I agree with many shares - though I respect the personal success of certain scientists, I think science should be shared between everybody who handles it with responsibility (which might be hard to assess). Especially in education we should all pull together because it is our future we're creating by teaching children and young adults!

Copyright is important because a research has been carried out, a work and this will be shared with all after being recorded in the annals of works presented.

It is difficult to position yourself on this issue because each case can be different. In the world of music there are controversies with copyright and in the world of health there could also be. I do not think it's as easy as saying that we have to share everything that benefits humanity because then we should define what we mean by benefitting? Health benefits? Economic benefits? Psychological benefits? In the educational field I think it is important that there are good materials available to everyone and it seems good to give up the rights so that what each one does, reaches the rest of the educational community but as long as there is not someone who takes advantage of it with commercial purposes.

I think it depends on the issue. For pharmaceuticals, they should be allowed to obtain a license for a drug but it needs to have an expiration date that way it is eventually affordable to the public and can be made into a generic.

In general, someone’s work must always be protected and he/she is the only owner However, it is difficult to derive a general rule as it is varies in every case. Licensing for song writing is very different than licensing for a medicine. I think is not think about to guard or not someone’s work by license. Rather to think if his/her work is done by his own resources and only, or partly by his own resources and partly by resources granted to him by a third party eg a company.

I believe that each creator has the natural right for and obligation to the work s/he creates. So, while producing a work, it is important to reflect on it via the past research/comments with specific references to the owners. Additionally, it is one's right not to want his/her work to be shared. The topic is a very difficult one and the negotiation can be achieved via critical thinking of the pros and cons.
