The time this takes place in
the story is at the end of the
twenty years that Odysseus was separated from his family and stranded on the island. This is proven by the quote, " This made Odysseus glad indeed, after all his sufferings; full of joy to be on his native soil..." (book 13, page 166). It is after the ten years of war and ten years of wandering around.

Book 13- In book 13, Odysseus is finally returned to Ithaca, and is first greeted by Athena, disguised as a mortal, after he wakes up on the beach. She leads Odysseus to a secluded place and tells him of her plan. She disguises Odysseus as an older man, and they part ways, Odysseus to his estate to have revenge on the suitors hogging his estate and taking everything of value, and Athena goes to tell Telemachos to return home.

Book 14- In book 14, Odysseus, in disguise, meets his servant the swineherd, who takes him in after saving him from the dogs. The swineherd takes Odysseus to his chamber near the pigs and treats him to a small pig and wine. The swineherd asks where he came from, and Odysseus tells him a story about his fake life, while also mentioning multiple times, to the swineherd’s disbelief, that Odysseus is still alive and on his way home, eventually making a deal with the swineherd about it. If he is correct, he gets a shirt and cloak, but if he is wrong, the swineherd can send the people of the house to find him and kill him. The swineherd agrees, the two pray to the Gods, and Odysseus, the swineherd, and others from the house all rest for the night.

Book 15- In book 15, Athena reaches Telemachos, and, while he sleeps, tells him that he is to return home immediately, and, to also be wary of the suitors, who wish to kill him before he reaches his home. He awakes and tells the man he traveled with that must set off immediately, and his host obliges, giving the both of them one last meal and three gifts before he leaves. Telemachos tells his men to board the ship immediately, while praying to the Gods, a runaway who was being hunted for killing a man of his kind asks Telemachos if he could come with, which Telemachos allows, after hearing his story. Finally, when they reach Ithaca, Telemachos gets off the ship before it docks, and tells the men on his ship to dock.
