From the first day I wondered into your room 14 years ago, you have treated me with kindness and respect. Everyone always sees that we give one another a hard time, but in all honesty, they don't get to see the wonderful working relationship we have created. Whether it is Christmas dinner with our families, grieving the loss of a loved one, talking about what career moves to make next, or working out a lesson together, you are my best friend and work partner. Let me paint you a picture:

About 5 years ago I walked in bright-eyed and bushy-tailed as a first-year teacher. I thought I was good at my job, but not great. I thought (and sometimes still think) I would get fired, or wouldn’t make it through the year. But you have always been there for me to tell me I’m fine, and to remind me that I’m lucky I’m pretty when I cry (yes, you said this to me mid-breakdown my first year). I truly don’t think I would have come this far without you, and I for sure would not be as good of a teacher. Your charm and charisma get me through the day, and days without you on campus are a little dimmer. You inspire me to be a better teacher, human, and friend <3 Thank you for being you. To my dear (old) friend, Ethel. Or was it Myrtle? Either way, we all know who Dick is. I will never forget walking into your classroom almost 10 years ago for one of my first meetings at Clear Brook. You had on a flannel shirt with cute colored flats (shocker, I know), and your energy simply radiated. I knew immediately we were bound for eternal friendship (sorry, that means you’re stuck with me!). I have learned so much from you over the years, from teaching to coaching to being a better human (welllllllllll, we won’t talk about that hypothetical kid of yours…). I value you and your friendship more than I could ever say. I know, without fail, that I can count on you for ANYTHING (including advice on how to appropriately wheelbarrow my dog). You have seen me through some of the most difficult times of my life, and I will never be able to repay you for that. You’re the one I turn to when I need advice, a suggestion, a conversation on a road trip, or just a good laugh. Thank you for being you and for being the best human I know. First of all, YOU are the kind of woman I'd buy a boat with. You're an unconditionally loving friend, teacher, and mentor. Your heart for others is steadfast, unwavering, and contagious. You make EVERYBODY feel like somebody. I firmly believe that if I peed my pants right now, you'd pee yours too just to save me from the shame. I don't know where to begin. You have taught me so much about being a teacher and continue teaching me each day and I'm so fortunate and blessed you're my coach. I couldn't even make powerpoints or plan lessons at the beginning of the year as well as a lot of other teacher things. So, thank you for always having my back, supporting me, and just being there for me this year. I appreciate you. I hope you enjoy your birthday and you have the best one ever!

I don't have any cool Carey stories as I am generally a boring person and hide in my room like a hermit crab most days. However, what I can say is that I can always count on Carey's bubbliness (word?) to brighten those tough days. I have never met another person who exudes joy as much as she does.

Carey, you have made all of our lives better and easier here at Brook. We are the best because YOU are the best. I love talking to you about books, characters, writing, my hopes and dreams for lessons I can someday teach, and all the animals we feel it is our mission and our mission alone to save. Thank you for always encouraging me to KEEP TRYING with kids I sometimes want to quit trying with. You make everything that feels impossible seem possible. You never give up on kids or us, and that makes us strive to be better too. We are all lucky and better for having you as a mentor and friend.

When I made the tragic decision to move to Pasadena ISD, I spent my hardest of days thinking about moving to Brook. One of the biggest reasons I wanted to come back was YOU. Your energy, wisdom, and ability to fix every problem pushed me to make the leap and leave. Working with you this year has made me reflect on my own teaching and pushed me to work harder for my students. I am so blessed to have you as my instructional coach. Happy Birthday to the most supportive, nurturing, and constant piece of the puzzle that has been my career in education.
Since the day I got Jernigan fired (lol), you have been my mentor, my fellow middle child/ENFP, my advocate, my voice when mine feels weak, the teacher I hope to one day be, and my friend.

Thank you for loving me through the last two years of trauma - for helping me understand and unpack the allllll the things.
Thank you for pushing me - even (especially) when I don't want to be pushed and believing in me until I believed in myself.
Thank you for being a driving force for representation, equity, and awareness in our school and in the district.
Thank you for all the binders, breakfasts, and salty cookies.
