The highest they could o, especially women because of the gender discrimination, was nursing or teachig, and even then, they could only nurse or teach black people. The black people faced more problems, but it was a conflict for both. As said in the Growing up White article, "Nobody had very much money. In the Depression years. If your father had a job, you had a good family."
