The Federal Government governs the entire
country. There are two main parts: the Parliament and the Judiciary.
Canada's Parliament buildings are situated in Ottawa, Ontario. They are
home to the Federal Government.

The
Parliament consists of the Governor General who represents the Queen of
England. Then there is the Senate which introduces and passes new laws.
The Members of the House of Commons exam and pass new laws. The federal
government is made up of people from every province of Canada. The
Canadian people elect the Members of Parliament, their leader becomes
Canada's Prime Minister.

The
second part is the Judiciary which is composed of the Supreme Court
whose judges are appointed by the Governor General. In addition to that
there is also a Federal Court which hears cases involving the laws of
the country. Last but not least, every province/territory has its own
provincial/territorial courts which hear relatively minor cases.

Every city in Canada has its own Municipal
Government. It is made up of people living in the town or city. It
looks after many things that we encounter in daily life, for example it
is responsible for clearing snow on the streets in winter and for the
garbage collection, and it ensures the safety of our community from
fire. The head of municipal government is the mayor.

Like the Federal Government, there is the
Parliament and the Judiciary. The Parliament's head is the Lieutenant
Governor (for the provinces) or the Commissioner (for the territories).
(S)he is the Queen's representative to each province or territory. The
Premier (provinces) or the Government Leader (territories) is the head
of the Government and helped by a cabinet of ministers. The last part of
the Parliament is the Legislative Assembly (YK, NT, NU, BC, AB, SK, MB,
ON, NB, PEI) or the House of Assembly (NL, NS) or the National
Assembly (QB) where proposed laws (called bills) are debated, analyzed
and changed. These assemblies are made up of members called MLAs
(Members of the Legislative Assembly), MHAs (Members of the House of
Assembly), MNAs (Members of the National Assembly)or MPPs (Members of
the Ontario legislature).

The
Provincial\Territorial Judiciary consists of the Provincial/Territorial
courts, which are made up of courts, judges and chief justices.
