Dear Malden Highschool with all the information i've read i can see why you guys are so hell bent on banning phones.
The first country to ban cellphones from school was the french government in july of 2018 after France did it other schools around the US started doing similar things as a way to decrease the distraction of the students phone were constantly a distraction but if phones were such a distraction then take a moment and think about the chromebooks kids on a daily basis use for netflix, youtube, social media, games and the list goes on and on what you guys fail to realize is that kids nowadays will find a way to communicate with each other or post something on the internet so believe it or not cell phone are not the only problem.
Researchers found out that without the distraction of phones kids have gotten higher test scores an article was published (Journal of communication education) and i quote “Students without cell phones perform better in several different areas. Honestly in my opinion I feel as though it doesn't matter having or not having a cell phone. Kids choose when and what they want to learn and if it's not a phone being distracting it's they're friends.
Today in the US 95% of adults have cell phones and 77% have a smartphone, my only question is what type of phone you have to take them away because a phone is a phone they are gonna be distracting no matter what kind of phone you have.
But what you guys also fail to look at is that phones can be helpful like when having to call a parent, or having to use your phone as a substitute for your computer because either the internet isn't working or they're computers are broken at the time.
In 2015 New york mayor Bill De Blasio lifted the ban on cell phones because he realized that parents and kids should be allowed access to get ahold of their parents no matter the time or the day and i know what you're thinking why are parents calling and texting their child during school hours well what if a family emergency happened or instead of mom picking them up dad is or instead of the getting picked up they are taking the bus it's stuff like that kids should be able to have access to they're phones any time of day.
In conclusion kids should be able to have their phones during school and they're rules you can place like keep in bag at all times while in class or keep off desk but banning phones is doing way too much.

Rosa parks didn’t want to give a white man her seat and she got arrested and because she did that a lot of people got motivated to stand up and change America’s segregation. It can be even small like Rosa parks b boycott on buses. doesn’t matter if you went alone because even if your alone your message is getting told and people can come and spread that message and people are going to help you.

A person who is an activist is truly brave, and unafraid, and fearless to share their ideas and voice their opinions on what they believe is right and just. Boniface Mwangi is a person who truly displays these traits. He is a journalist from Kenya who was not afraid to speak out against the government’s horrible acts. People in his home country call him a “heckler” or an “irritant” and a “troublemaker” but what he did for his country was that he was able to shed light on topics that were too taboo and ignored due to the fear of being placed in jail because they were speaking out against the country’s leaders. You should follow his models because I know you believe something is wrong and that everything is not okay. Even when Mwangi had his friends back him up, but then fail to show up, he continued because he wanted to shed light on taboo topics and fight against what he believes is wrong. “I took images of the violence happening across the country and get people talking about it. We traveled the country and showed the images and this was a journey…” Referring to my phenomenon about social media and sharing information and ideas on social media, it revved people up and allows for them to start talking about issues and ideas. This phenomenon where humans begin to start sharing their thoughts allows for unification across several people and allows for people to group up and hold peaceful protests and conversations to end what inhuman things are happening.

Students who have phones should lock their phone up before school starts and get them back after school ends. At California State University, professor Larry Rosen says “I recommend what he calls a quick "tech break" — when teachers pause the class and allow students to check their phones. It could start with shorter intervals, like every 15 minutes, and gradually work up to every 30 minutes or more.” I believe that this is the correct method of handling it because there is no argument about mobile phones being distracting, but considering the amount of students who are addicted to their phones, it can cause anxiety to be off of their phones for 8 hours each day. Even if each class loses 5 minutes due to breaks, the anxiety relief it causes will allow the students to refresh themself and regain focus after the break is over. At Newton North High School, teacher Albert Cho says “During passing time, I [used to] take out my cell phone, and check my email, and not interact with the kids. So I think it's a good lesson.” This shows that teachers should also put away their phones in order to interact with their students more, even if it's not to the extent of locking the phones away cause of emergencies, for the most part forcing teachers to put away their phones so they can be more involved with their students would only be a positive and involves no drawback.

Chad, I’ve heard that you wanted to protest about whether or not a hot dog is a sandwich. That’s a very controversial opinion that you’re fighting for. It takes a lot of guts to go out there and tell people how you really feel about hot dogs. It’s ok to be scared and nervous. But nothing happens when nothing is done. The only way something could be done is if something happens. If this issue really matters to you, then you should go out and protest. Show everyone that you’re not scared and that you want them to listen to your magnificent voice. Be like Antigone, who fought against the authority for what she believed in. Be like Boniface Mwangi, who fought to end corruption in Kenya’s government. They never gave up on their beliefs because they were alone or scared. They fought for what they believed in.

Phones have become an essential part of daily life in our society today. About 95% of teenagers have access to smartphones and it appears that they especially find it difficult to spend time away from their devices. This fixation on their phones is taking a major toll on some of their performances in school, which is why some schools have adopted the Yondr technology in an effort to help solve this issue. The Yondr technology is pouches that lock up phones until class or the school day is over. I believe that Malden High School should adopt this Yondr technology because it will eliminate the main distraction to students, get them more engaged in class, and help them realize how dependent they are on their phones.

All in all, in life it's important to slow down and take a breather. Sometimes we just have to take a moment and focus on the things around us without getting distracted by the simplest of things like our cell phones. Even for 30 minutes to an hour, we can spare the time to catch up on anything we are missing, enjoy some time with friends and family or even simply go outside and enjoy nature. Limiting our access to cell phones will help in that and allow us to better manage our time in this fast-evolving society that's constantly changing.

The first article circles around the fact that the use of cellphones in school is bad, proving that Yondr could be seen in the nearby future of MHS. The article proves Yondr’s technology is going to advance MHS, it says “One study published by the London School of Economics traced the impact of banning mobile phones at schools on exam scores. Researchers found that students in schools with phone bans earned higher test scores and that low-performing students benefited the most.”This makes it so obvious that Yondr is what MHS needs. During a test or important assignment, you can keep the phones in the bags and they have no access to them. It is so easy to use and you can give students breaks so they can stay engaged as well.

To sum it up, Malden High School should adopt Yondr technology due to its good price and its ability to reduce distractions. However, Yondr technology is so much more than just a tool to help students focus at school. It also helps students to succeed in life and enjoy it. When you look at a screen all day, you’re missing out on all the fun activities like hanging out with friends, going to the park, and etc. All these things are much more memorable than just using your phone. If everyone decreased their cell phone usage, they’ll notice that they feel more content and overall, have a better mood.

Technology, something that we use everyday. In school, at work, going to sleep or just hanging out with people. We use this in every aspect of our lives. But there are times that technology just takes over peoples lives, they take over the things that are most important. One of those things is our education. Technology is used in school over and over by teachers and students alike. The best thing is just to take it away. Relieving students of their technology and giving it back at the end of the day. “Yondr” is the best way to do this, it's cheap, easy to use, helps students give up their phones, and is scientifically proven to work.

Just like this fearless character that I know, Antigone, who inspired me in so many ways by being her reckless, brave, and bold self. She stood up to the law of her city by putting in jeopardy her personal belief against legal authority. She displayed this level of leadership by burying her brother, which in her times was considered illegal. She got caught, therefore she had to face the consequences, which was death: and still she stood in front of the leader and said “I knew I must die, I am only mortal, As if I must die, Now before it is time to die Surely this is no hardship can anyone living as I live with evil all about me think death less than a friend, this death of mine is of no importance but if I had left my brother lying in death unburied I should have suffered now I do not”. She not only inspired and left with no regrets but she left this legacy standing up against the law for what she believed in. Be as brave as Antigone.

Speaking up means more than just inspiring others, you also leave this legacy on a pedestal where others will later on decide to follow and continue with it. I also encourage you to be “uncool” just like the “be nobody's darling” poem written by Alice Walker. I comprehend that you will also face hardships. You will have people on your path think that you're not like the others. And that's the beauty of it. Because just like the poem said “ Be an outcast; Be pleased to walk alone (Uncool) or line the crowded river beds with other impetuous Fools.” In other words, be unique. And that's what is going to captivate people into following you.
