Eratosthenes, born 276 BCE in Cyrene, Lybia was a greek mathematician who calculated the diameter of the Earth with unrivaled accuracy for the time. He put a stick in the dirt at Alexandria and saw that it was at a seven-degree angle as opposed to a zero-degree angle in another city then, he got a servant to pace the distance. Using these measurements, he predicted the Earth's circumference to 50 miles from the actual distance. He died in Alexandria, Egypt in 194 BCE.
