Eratosthenes, born 276 BCE in Cyrene, Lybia was a greek mathematician who calculated the diameter of the Earth with unrivaled accuracy for the time. He put a stick in the dirt at Alexandria and saw that it was at a seven-degree angle as opposed to a zero-degree angle in another city then, he got a servant to pace the distance. Using these measurements, he predicted the Earth's circumference to 50 miles from the actual distance. He died in Alexandria, Egypt in 194 BCE.

Well, Eratosthenes was a mathematician, astronomer, geographer, and poet. born in Cyrene, Libya in 276 BCE, and died in 194 BCE in Alexandria, Egypt at the age of 82. He created the first map of the whole earth with just 2 surface points to measure from! He basically invented longitude and latitude. He also designed a finding prime number system which we now use all the time.
