I’m so excited now that I can talk in the past tense in Spanish, I love to tell people stories of what I’ve done, what I’ve seen and how I felt and now I can express that. I can also now tell people about my daily routine, how to prepare foods, tell others what to do or what not to do in “you” statements, what I like to wear, what I like or want to do, what I’ve done and what I was going to do, what I’ve bought, how I get or got to where I was going, I can talk about my school and how it was, I can talk about people and describe people in the past tense, I can describe places and rooms in the past tense, I can talk about my past times in the past tense, and I can talk about my community in the past tense. I apologize for that long run-on sentence but I’ve really learned a lot in Spanish II.

[Part 1: bullet 4] What differences have you seen between the Spanish language and your native language?

A difference I have seen between the Spanish language and English language include the lack of apostrophes ( ‘ ) in Spanish, instead, if you're trying to use an possessive of an object in Spanish you’d say “the object of” then the person’s name. Another difference I’ve noticed in Spanish is that descriptions are backwards, in English you could say “the red car” but in Spanish you’d say “the car red” and if you wanted to say “the black shoes” in Spanish you’d say “the shoes blacks”. Also in Spanish there are feminine and masculine variations of most words, which we don’t have in English. Yet another difference is the fact that the Spanish language uses quite a lot of verb endings for the preterite and imperfect tenses, where as in the English language to denote that we are talking about a past or a completed task we add a "-ed" or "-t" to the end of our word or verb.

(I made this image using Microsoft Word, taking a screenshot and cropping the image using Microsoft Paint)

Some things I find interesting and exciting about the Spanish culture is the language itself and all of the famous places you could visit in Spain. I think that Spanish is a lovely language and it is fun to learn. On another note, I found it interesting that Spain basically shuts down for two hours a day for Siesta; it would be amazing if we did that here in the United States. Also, I really enjoyed learning about Spain and its architectural and cultural history, it's such a historically rich place.

I have no idea I hope to learn if I continue to study the Spanish language, I’m just hoping I’ll have the opportunity to continue learning Spanish and to hopefully travel to a Spanish speaking country for a vacation or possible residency for a few years. I’m also hoping to become fluent in Spanish so when and if I have kids they will be bilingual in Spanish and English; that is if I don’t decide to take on learning another language. I say I want my children to be bilingual because there are cognitive benefits of learning additional languages in childhood development. People who are bilingual, in general, have greater activity within the brain, and denser tissue in the memory, attention, and language regions of the brain in comparison to monolingual people. Also, most universities require that students have 2 classes minimum of a foreign language to be accepted.

[Part 2: bullet 1] We have learned elements of a language in a different teaching/learning style than you may be used to. Talk about your experience with learning Spanish in an online class.

Taking an online language is something that I’m not used to at all, and it took quite a bit of adapting to but I feel as though I’ve done my best. When I took Spanish Introduction and Spanish 1 in 2014 I had a face to face teacher and we learned Spanish at a slower pace compared to this Spanish 2 course. I knew going into this class it would be a quicker paced class and I find it kind of insane that in 8 weeks I’ve majorly increased my Spanish vocabulary and grammar. Also, I heard “bad stories” from people taking online Spanish 1 saying that they didn’t any help from their teacher which seems crazy to me because there are Required Live Classes where you can ask questions, videos to practice vocabulary to, daily announcements and/or help, grammar help, vocabulary and grammar activities, and the teachers welcome you to contact them for help. Another new thing for me was the Required Live Classes; in all of the online classes I’ve done, I’ve never had online live class I could go to. In fact, I think that online live classes are awesome for clarifying questions and learning information. I so wouldn’t mind taking a Spanish 3 course online, when I get the chance.

I honestly loved the required live classes, the videos to practice vocabulary, the daily announcements/help, the grammar help, the vocabulary and grammar activities, the feedback, and that teachers welcome you to contact them for help. Like I’ve said before, in all of the online classes I’ve done I’ve never had online live class I could go to for help and in the other online classes I’ve done I didn’t actually talk to my teachers at all. Like I’d email them asking for help but they never really helped and rarely replied. This is the best online class I’ve taken. I don’t think anything need to be improved for this class as it is very refined, there is nothing I really struggled with and everything I could have ever needed was already fully explained and there for me. I’d say the only thing I slightly didn’t like was having an 18 week class condensed into 8 weeks, I say “slightly didn’t like” because I feel like having this condensed classed helped me in my time management skills and also helped me to realize that I could possibly take and succeed in other condensed courses. I suppose you can say there was no part of this class I completely disliked. (On a side note, this is the first ever condensed class and/or summer class I’ve taken).

To improve my Spanish learning in the future, I plan on continuing to listen to my favorite songs with Spanish subtitles, read Spanish comics, and used Duolingo and perhaps I will find my favorite Disney movies in Spanish with English subtitles or in English with Spanish subtitles. I’m looking forward to possibly taking Spanish 3 in the future also.

Here is a movie I have watched in Spanish with English subtitles and I want to watch it again. She gave me plenty of very helpful personal feedback and resources, always updated the daily announcement with help, explained things very clearly, always responded within a reasonable time frame, and checked in with me of where I was in the list of assignments or my plan for the week.
