The thing that interested me the most about this biphasic stimulator was how deteriorated the machine looked. It's rusted metal and corroded wood created an old and another life time sort of atmosphere.

In this piece I decided on using collage. I cut out different shapes from a magazine and arranged them in place. To mimic the corrosion I stained a piece of paper with a tea bag and let it dry before adding it on.

I painted sections of paper neutral colours for a copper/deteriorating idea. Once I had painted them I then cut them out and glued them on top of each other. I done this as a way of thinking what the machine would look like dismantled and parts layered in different angles. I then painted the background using black acrylic to accentuate the mechanical feeling of the shapes in the middle. Finally, I added sections of the orange and green knobs in specific corners of the shapes that are layered in acrylic paint to give them texture.

I was influenced by the style that DADA artists use in their collages. In particular the work of Kurt Schwitters. I used a combination of paper stained by a tea bag, painted sections of paper, paper cut from an article that was discussing epilepsy, and oil pastels. I felt that the strongest point in this was the circles on the biphasic stimulator because it attracts our eyes to the centre of the machine. However I feel that the green and orange shapes I cut and glued round about the machine were too distracting and took the attention away from the focal point.

After looking at the images of the corroding pole I decided to use a tea bag to paint the background then I ripped the tea bag open and took out the tea leaves. I added them onto the page and shaped them to look like a certain part of the machine. I done this as a means to create something that was more 3D and provide a texture that you could touch. Touching the tea leaves causes them to crumble which is what I was trying to illustrate in this piece.
