When I was in 8th Grade, we had an assignment of where we saw ourselves in the next five years. It was basically a very vague guideline of activities that I thought would make me happy. When looking over this assignment three years later, little to none of these activities make me happy now. It's interesting to see my so called "perception of my future" turn out drastically different.

While the things on the list pertain more towards people who live in Britain, there are many things that many people, around the world, can relate to. I feel like a lot of things on this list are mainly part of first world happiness though, not really applying to other people in drastically different situations. I'm going to have to do more contrasting research to really get a clear picture of what makes people truly happy.

It's common knowledge that "more stuff" will never make you happy, but sometimes people need a little reminder of what's truly essential to happiness. The main point of this article is that you will never be able to quench your thirst for possessions, it's never enough. Wishing and wanting for more will just leave you unsatisfied and empty. While on the other hand, I kind of believe that you can have a few objects that hold a great amount of sentiment that will make you happy every time you look at them. Maybe it was a gift from a family member or a dear friend, that you cherish or maybe just some random small object that every time you see, brings you happiness. Whatever it may be, you may be able to find happiness within small. memorable possessions, just not through the "art of hoarding."

"Can't repeat the past?" Gatsby cried incredulously. "Why of course you can!" Gatsby felt he could win back Daisy by going back to a past moment before Daisy married Tom. Gatsby truly believed you can go back to a happier time in a relationship, "I'm going to fix everything just the way it was before."
Gatsby talked a lot about the past, and I gathered that he wanted to recover something, some idea of himself perhaps, that had gone into loving Daisy (Fitzgerald, p. 110).
This is a challenge for all friendship and relationships. You remember the excitement of the first moment you met and it can forever change you. Remembering happy moments is fine but you should be present in a relationship and not just live in the past to be truly happy.

The House on Mango Street depicts the struggle of Esperanza to rise above her humble beginnings. She hopes to change her destiny from being married at a young age, to live independently from a man and have her own career. Esperanza dreams of leaving Mango Street and the restrictive role that woman play in her culture, to become a writer and create her own destiny. In the last vignette, Esperanza describes her future dream to have a house of her own. "Not a flat. Not an apartment in back. Not a man's house. Not a daddy's. A house all my own. My books and my stories. Only a house quiet as snow, a space for myself to go, clean as paper before the poem, (Cisneros, P.108). Esperanza say Goodbye to Mango Street in the last vignette. "One day I will pack my bags of books and paper. One day I will say Goodbye to Mango. I am too strong for her to keep me here forever, (Cisneros, p. 110). Esperanza finds her happiness by dreaming of a better future for herself. A future in which she controls her own destiny and does not have to be controlled by or answer to a husband.

Despite his struggles Santiago never gives up on his dreams and ambitions. Santiago’s body is covered with scars from the sea; but these battle scars serve as reminders of strength not weakness. In the novel, Santiago gains inspiration through reflection, “He knew no man was ever alone on the sea” (Hemingway, p.61). Life is presented as preparation for the test that proves the worth of a creature. Therefore, the physical struggle takes on battle tone since it a noble act a creature can perform in life. Santiago accepts what the trials and triumphs the sea offers. The novel “Old Man and the Sea,” is a culmination of Hemingway’s extensive travels and life experiences and should be viewed as a spiritual journey.
