The anatomical structures involved in Multiple Sclerosis are the brain and spinal cord, also known as the central nervous system. More specifically, the CNS is made up of nerve cells including neurons, glial cells, gray matter, and white matter. Neurons are composed of a cell body (soma), dendrites, and axons. Around the axons is a protective covering called myelin which acts and insulation and allows information to travel quickly and effectively.

Multiple Sclerosis can cause chronic or permanent disruptions to vision, including optic neuritis, color blindness, as well as total vision loss. Chronic neuritis usually occurs in one eye at a time and the prolonged inflammation of the optic nerve causes damage to the nerve fibers, ultimately leading to color blindness or total vision loss. Optic neuritis causes a large "blind spot," leaving the person with a prominent, black hole in the middle of their visual field. This "blind spot" is not curable with eyeglasses or medications.

Some long-term medication options for patients with Multiple Sclerosis include oral drugs like teriflunomide (Aubagio) and siponimod (Mayzent). The average cost for a 30 day supply of teriflunomide (name brand Aubagio) is over $9,000, but generic brand can be as low as $11. The average cost of siponimod (name brand Mayzent) can exceed over $17,000 (over $88,000 per year). If a patient chooses not to seek treatment because of cost, they risk faster disease progression, greater disability over time, and more frequent flare ups.

By not receiving the Interferon beta-1a treatment, those experiencing MS will experience worsening symptoms due to the patients' inflamed myelin sheaths, causing more consistent relapses.

Physical therapy helps manage the pain of some of the symptoms brought with multiple sclerosis. The expected cost of physical therapy for treating a person diagnosed with multiple sclerosis is between $75 and $120 per session. A referral from a doctor is necessary for insurance to cover the physical therapy sessions. Most insurance plans will only cover a certain amount of sessions during the year. If patients do not follow the orders of their doctors and decide to not follow up with their physical therapy sessions because of the cost, symptoms can worsen and functions of their bodies can be permanently damaged.

Hispanic men are more negatively affected by MS because of the how the biological progression of the disease differs of other populations . Those of hispanic descent are more likely to develop lesions on their spinal cord and lower brainstem than Caucasians. Problems in the spinal cord are also more common, but it’s not exactly clear why. Some challenges that Hispanic men can face, with treatment, are a lack of knowledge and socioeconomic factors. Often, Hispanic men are more likely to experience barriers in accessing health care due to financial challenges or lower health care literacy. This can affect Hispanic mental and physical health, often resulting in a negative impact on the individual.

Older adults are affected differently by MS than other populations primarily because of the age factor and on top of MS treatment they may already be taking other medication, so there is a risk of drug interactions. As individuals get older their immune system changes, which increases the risk of symptoms worsening. Older cells cannot launch massive immune assaults, causing chronic low-grade inflammation. This causes long-term health problems, which can delay diagnosis. In older adults there is a higher likelihood of the disease progressing faster leading to relapsing remitting MS.

One of the most common and well known tools used to help diagnose and monitor patients with MS is MRI scans. An MRI is a type of medical technology used to create images by using strong magnets and radio waves to create pictures of the inside of a patient’s body. For MS patients, it is especially useful for detecting lesions on the brain and spinal cord, which helps doctors identify and diagnose the disease. Some contraindications to using MRI machines are risks to those with metal objects and/or implants in their body (ex: pacemaker, metal shards in eye, aneurysm clips), burns if the patient touches the side of the machine, and allergic reactions to the contrast.

Supplementation of vitamin D has been shown to reduce MS activity on MRI scans and is associated with lower relapse risk.
