Having book discussions is also useful for the student. Having a book discussion orally may be beneficial to students who have difficulty with fine motor skills. It gives the student the opportunity to share their writing verbally and participate in the Writing Workshop.

Listening: When students are exposed to a rich variety of literature and different pieces of writing, they begin to notice and think about the decisions that are made by the authors and then apply that to their own writing. It is also very beneficial because it gives students the opportunity to listen to their peers and their writing pieces. Students' listening skills are also used during the read aloud because they are actively listening to the teacher.

Talking: In a writing workshop, the concept of talk is very important. When children are able to speak about a story before they write about it or even during the writing process, they show more of a motivation to write. This allows children to find his or her own unique voice. Keeping writers notebooks and listening to storytelling are among the many suggested methods and they are all worthy practices, but the most effective method for capturing the students voice is to let the students use their own voices to tell stories before they write them. When students talk, they must find their voices to tell the story, and those voices find their way into writing as well. During the Writing Workshop, the students are also talking with the teacher and with one another about their writing pieces and also when they receive feedback!

Viewing: In a Writing Workshop, students will spend time looking at both popular
authors and their peers writing pieces. Students will take a look into someone else's life through reading someone's writing. Students will peer edit and view what their peers have written, giving positive feedback and suggestions. Students can also view different writing pieces from different authors. Viewing other individual's writing pieces can give them guidance and confidence for their writing.

Visual Representation: Writing workshop is a great time for a teacher to pull in outside resources. Drawing is a great way to incorporate visual representation in a Writing Workshop. Students can write a piece and draw a picture to go along with their story. This allows the student's story to be told in two different perspectives. Creating a diorama is another great way to implement visual representation into a writing workshop. Students could be given the choice of whether they want to write a story or make a diorama (3D model representing a scene). Giving them a choice is a great way to support various learners. Students can also have a chance to sit in the "Author's Chair" in the classroom and share their writing with their peers and teacher. Students will also have the opportunity to hear/read/see other authors and hear their stories through read aloud. Children can look at certain author's books to review certain traits of the writing process. Author's and their books, can act as great mentor's for young children.Creating a PowerPoint would also be another option for students during a writing workshop. They could create a story line via powerpoint and then share out verbally to the class while displaying the powerpoint in the background.

English Language Learners:
Supporting students who are ELLs
(English Language Learners) in a writing workshop is so important. ELLs should have the choice of what language they prefer to write in, especially if they are just beginning to learn English. As a teacher, you do not want to put more stress on the student, as learning to speak English is already enough stress for them. Another great way to support an ELL would be to have them keep a writer's notebook. Have the student practice writing in both English and their dominant language in this notebook. The students' writer's notebook will be a place for them to keep their thoughts and experiences and not have the pressure of the words needing to be spelled correctly and in the English language. Also, with a more advanced ELL, the ELL will be paired up with a student in the classroom who is a strong writer. The student could guide/help the ELL become a great writer!
