Silence is an integral part of the learning process, but I am not sure that Structured Silence would be beneficial in the classroom due to the timing constraints of the overloaded curriculum.

One thing I am unclear about in this chapter is Brookfield's intention with the Newsprint Dialogue technique as he obviously supports it being used in the democratic classroom. Still, he clearly states it will provoke, from the learner, antidemocratic thinking responses. Due to so many cons, I am unclear if the technique's benefits outweigh the cons.

It must also find ways to involve the contributions of those who are less drawn to speaking or less comfortable with writing" (p.126). because every voice matters regardless of how loud they speak. There have often been times in my academic, personal and professional life when I encountered individuals with amazing ideas and thoughts. Still, they were too shy or soft-spoken to present their ideas to a group of people. Ideas presented verbally or in writing should have the same impact rather than just the loudest voice in the room having the most significant impact.

I disagree with his stance on ethical coercion. Brookfield states, "they are required

to coerce—to force—students to engage with materials and ideas

those students would prefer to avoid. To shy away from this task

because it goes against the wishes of the majority is to neglect the

democratic imperative." (p. 131). There is a fine line where we should expand our beliefs, but I disagree with forcing someone to engage in materials they want to avoid. I think this can have the opposite effect he hopes for.

One thing that I am unclear about is how valuable Structured Silence would be in the classroom. It would take a lot of time away from meaningful learning and discussions and is rather impractical in practice vs. theory.
