What I Knew...

I always admired sculptures from afar ever since I was just a kid. It was something I would perceive as a person or a thing, who was of high status or of a high value, since not everyone is worthy enough to be made one and not everything is essential at all to have.

Sculptures are painting but in 3D. I can feel, touch, and even hold it. But of course, that is not the case for every sculptures. The most common for me was marble and clay. But I already knew anything that you can shape into something or someone can be classified as a sculpture.

What I Learned...

So far what I have learned from the lessons and reading of Statuary is more on the basics of understanding what it is.

Solid, which creates proportions that are pleasing to the eyes, are Statues.
Sculpture, according to one definition and as quotes from the book Forms and Substances in the Art by Gilson, "is the art of expressing ideas, feelings, or characteristics by the chosen and obvious imitations of living forms".

The end or final purpose of sculpture as fine art is BEAUTY. There are a variety of principles that go into making and understanding a Sculpture. For instance, its orientation, proportion, scale, articulation, and even balance. These principles are what makes a statue meaningful and beautiful.

Statuary is an three-dimensional art of space. For it is of the essence of the statue that it be given all at once. It is close to impossible to see a statue without looking at it in its entirety or all its aspects.

Prior to learning about Sculptures in general I would also like to dig in deeper on what it takes to become a sculptor. Because it takes more than talent and enthusiasm to make it as a sculptor in this generation. In line with this, I would also want to learn more about how to actually make a Sculpture and what difficulties they encounter into making one.

OE: Moses for the tomb of Pope Julius II

This sculpture of Moses which was sculpted by the one and only Italian High Renaissance artist Michelangelo Buonarroti, housed in the church locate din Rome, inside the church of San Pietro. As seen in the photo, the sculpture was made of marble seated with a very neutral expression, which then appeals to the audience as Moses having a serious attitude. His figure shows him holding onto his beard, which looked like a smoothly brushed hair. In line with this, it is also clearly seen that his right arm, along with the left, are protecting the stone like blank tablets, which can be assumed to be the Commandments given by God.

In addition, given that it is a seated figure, the entirety of the sculpture shows a bit of passion and power as it gives a kind of intense energy by how Moses is positioned and how he is built. It is clearly seen in his arms and legs that he has power and strength. This can be seen in his very creasy thick robe and his budging vein like figures running along his arms. Lastly, his horns symbolise him being called the light, not the misconceptions people have of it.

Source of the photo: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/3/37/Michelangelo_Mose_2007.jpg
