Kaiser promotes healthy babies with Dr. Richard Isaacs

Kaiser pushes for greater
breast-feeding success among moms

The healthiest
thing any child will ever consume is his or her
mother’s breast milk. Kaiser Permanente South Sacramento wants to make certain
new mothers learn how to breastfeed their babies before they leave the hospital
to increase the future good health for babies.

Kaiser Permanente South Sacramento was
recently designated a “Baby Friendly” hospital in accordance with the World
Health Organization’s Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative.

The staff had a small celebration on Aug. 14.

Max Villalobos, senior vice president for
Kaiser Permanente South Sacramento said, “This is an international
recognition.”

He said a special thanks to Barb Hansen,
assistant manager of health education, and Cheryl Cox, manager of the perinatal
services unit.

“Sometimes we overuse words, but this is
prestigious,” he said.

Currently, Kaiser South Sacramento is one of
83 hospitals nationwide to fulfill the program’s 10-step process to become baby
friendly.

The Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative was
launched in 1991 with help from UNICEF. Kaiser staff received a certificate of
intent to work towards being admitted to the Baby Friendly program in 1993.

Physician-in-Chief, Dr.
Richard S. Isaacs thanked the staff for their commitment.
Isaacs, an ear, nose and throat doctor, said he learned that breast-feeding a
baby causes fewer ear infections as they grow.

“It gives the child the best start,” he said.
“It gives them natural immunity, it helps prevent infection, and it gives them
tremendous nutrition. But more importantly it’s an emotional bond between the
mother and the child.”

Debra Payne, program planner for First 5
Sacramento was at the Aug. 14 ceremony to congratulate the staff. First 5
Sacramento was involved with this program at Kaiser too.

Joni Wuthrich, director of prenatal services,
said the staff have undergone training courses, learning the importance of
encouraging breast-feeding over formula and allowing new mothers to “room in,”
or stay with their baby the entire hour after delivery to breastfeed.

“I’ve been a nurse for 34 years and every
single year more research comes out about how good breast-feeding is for
babies,” she said.

Dessiree Whitehurst gave birth to her first
child, a girl, on Aug. 13 at Kaiser in South Sacramento. The fact that Kaiser
South Sacramento is in the Baby Friendly program and promotes breast-feeding
amongst new mothers was reassuring to her as a new mom, she said.

“I’ve heard so many things like ‘It’s hard to
breastfeed,’” she said. “Knowing that there is so much help- it’s really good
for me.”

Whitehurst had already started breast-feeding
her baby by the next day.

As part of the Baby Friendly Initiative,
Kaiser will not accept free formula from vendors.

“We separated our relationship with formula
vendors and that is a part of baby friendly too,” Wuthrich said.

Formula is prescribed when it is medically
recommended for babies, rather than being a substitute for milk.

Wuthrich said baby formula is healthy, but
human milk is better.

Not all women have to breast-feed, they
support family choice too, she added.

The Hay Group Singapore: People management

In the aviation business, each airline has a different definition of talent in “Knowledgeable talent” and “Good-minded talent” perspective. This is why each airline has different characteristics and structure. Starting from the definition of its “Talent” for Low Cost Carriers (LCCs) and Full Service Carriers (FSCs), I will explain how it is different.

Historically, FSCs started doing business by focusing on reliability in delivering products and services, based on rare technological skills. Compared to today, the overall external suppliers in the market at that time were not strong enough to support some piece in value chain of operations, thus the organization and job structures were functionally designed under the concept that all jobs had to be built in-house. The older organizations, the more jobs are tinily separated especially for each individual, without using any human resource management tools such as job evaluation to define job level properly. This results in a silo structure where organizations need to assemble many employees for just a single project because everyone have their own tiny piece of accountability. When there, however, are many people involved but no one has mighty decision-making authority, it results frequent number of meetings series which often unable to achieve consensus, leading to red tape operations cause uncompetitive business. This symptom happens not only in Thailand but also all over the world, especially in countries where airlines had operated as a monopoly.

While the newly set-up LCCs are also focusing on reliability, but different on customer perspective rather technological skills. Because LCCs were established in times of high competitiveness and external suppliers in the market today are capable enough to support more services in non-core works, thus the organizations are structured to be process-base and matrix management so as to be more agile and flexible with faster decision-making, which leads to increased competitiveness.

Due to the different organization structure design, the definition of Talent of “Knowledgeable talent” and “Good-minded talent” for these two carriers will be different. At FSCs owned the silo structure requires knowledgeable talent to possess specific skills and in-depth understanding in their jobs. The more the job is separated, the smaller the job scope. The structure shows common symptom when decisions cannot be easily made in meetings or either the employee who accountable for the required information is absence. In this structure, each job is obviously designed separating from others. In the matrix structure, however, LCCs’s knowledgeable talent are multi-skilled made the organization structure flatter and slimmer impacting to ease of job rotation for future career. In another hand, good minded talent in the silo structures are employees who strictly accept and follow rules and regulations, while good-minded talent for the matrix structures tend to be employees who are able to operate within the boundaries of the rules and regulations.

Due to the different demand of knowledgeable and good minded talent lead to different practice in each HR value chain. Starting from observation in cabin crew recruitment, airlines find different characteristics of their right seeds. For example, Thai Airways seem recruits cabin crews who behave in the traditional Thai manner, while Thai AirAsia seem differently recruits cabin crews who are confident and charming, and in different way, ThaiSmile seem recruits crews who are chic and cheerful. Each airline tries to select the best cabin crews to fit the type of service they offer. Making us difficult to imagine traditional Thai mannered crew to sing and sell products to passengers onboard or to imagine chic confident cabin crews to inconveniently serve passengers in a very traditional Thai. Selecting the right people is a fundamental factor in driving organization efficiency.

Work-related pay in logistic industry including aviation business is designed to be much higher in work-related pay compared to other industries. For example, at some regional airlines, while cabin crew normally receive total pay around 40 – 50,000 Baht a month, the monthly salary is only fewer higher than 10,000 Baht. The remainder comprises flight allowance and other pay, which the crew will not receive if they are not working on flights. The flight allowance is calculated differently in each airline, for FSCs, which have cross–continents flights, flight allowances are conventionally paid as per diem rate or daily allowance. This kind of allowance is complex to calculate. LCCs which have regional flights normally pay as block hours, which is calculated based on flight duration in flight schedule. The block hours are easier to calculate compared to per diem as of it straightforward. For other pays, another main differentiator between FSCs and LCCs is the share that the crew receive for selling products on the airplane. FSCs do not focus that much on sale of products, while the LCCs give significant attractive pay for this. Some airlines also include sale commission in severance package when the employment contract ends while some don’t.

When differentiating between businesses, some may think in terms of equipment or pay level. Actually, job design and people manage are the critical differentiating factors. As observed in the aviation business, while airlines have the same Boeing or Airbus aircrafts, they are performing differently in their business concepts with different job design and people management, leading to different positioning of each airlines. Every concept has their own strengths and weaknesses depending on the airlines’ focus. Organizations need to find their own differentiator and align it with their job and people structure to create a competitive advantage in today’s complex business landscape.

Online Security - BEWARE: Cyber Criminals are Having a “Field Day” with
Software Vulnerabilities

Heimdal Security just completed a widespread intelligence analysis of system software vulnerabilities. Our data clearly shows that the problem of software vulnerabilities is actually growing and you may think that companies already got better at closing security gaps faster.

The Bad News

The main problem here is that time periods between patches don’t follow and fix the great amount of vulnerabilities that continue to appear.

Some vendors are improving though.

Security holes in software is arguably one of the most used attack vector malicious hackers employ in a modern IT environment, with exploits accounting for 60 – 90% of the attack , depending on which data you look at.

This is precisely one of the reasons why you would think that software companies should be very quick at closing their security gaps, but the actual situation indicates quite the opposite.

If we take a quick look at the most vulnerable 3rd party software in the market, the list narrows in on some of the most used software components in the world.

The Numbers Speak for Themselves

The top 4 pieces of most commonly used vulnerable 3rd party software in 2012 / 2013 / 2014 are:

1. Oracle Java Runtime environment

2. Adobe Acrobat Reader

3. Adobe Flash Player / Plugin

4. Apple Quicktime

Of these 4, Adobe Flash Player accounts for 314 registered vulnerabilities alone in 2015. That comes to 26 vulnerabilities PER MONTH! The next piece of software on the list is Acrobat Reader with 130 vulnerabilities or 10,8 per month, still quite high, but not as extreme.

Placing them in a table, the 4 appear as below for 2012 / 2013 / 2014 / 2015 respectively:

If you look closely at the numbers, it is highly concerning that Java has an average of roughly 9 new vulnerabilities discovered every month. That is an extreme number. Looking at Adobe’s products, that number is significantly lower but still very alarming, ranging from 3 vulnerabilities on average in Acrobat Reader to 4 in Adobe Flash Player.

The only decent performer in the field is Apple with their Quicktime software, which has approximately 1,2 vulnerabilities per month and that number appears to be decreasing, while the others show no general improving trend.

On its own it might not be a concern that the numbers of vulnerabilities are high, but for Java for example, the number of vulnerabilities are actually higher than on some Windows operating systems.

Not only that the severity of the vulnerabilities above are extreme as well.

The average severity of each of the vulnerabilities on these products is listed below with a CVSS (Computer vulnerability severity system) score, where 7-10 means a HIGH number!

When showing the data on a visual graph, you have an indication that all 4 products are clearly at or above the limit of critical vulnerabilities number on average.

So not only is the number of vulnerabilities highly alarming, but it also represents an important attack vector which poses a severe security risk for our computer systems. That becomes relevant because a very commonly used attack vector on our systems today is by linking to URLs which point to malicious content that can exploit known software vulnerabilities.

In fact, another recent study performed by Heimdal and one of its partners showed that 27% of all delivered emails contain malicious URLs, which try to access your PC by using malicious code or exploits.

Corporate Security Risks are High

Naturally, all this concern about exploits only becomes relevant if these 4 pieces of 3rd party software we cover in this article are actually being used, so we also looked into that as well. The data stacks up as below and we took the liberty of combining it with the severity score.

If we place the data on a visual graph, we notice a clear market evolution for Adobe Acrobat Reader and the high average usage of the Oracle Java.

All this data is more than scary. Intelligence shows that usage of Java, Acrobat Reader and Adobe Flash Player is very common on business computers and has been for a while. The good news is that Flash usage has dropped significantly, mainly because HTML 5 replaced the need for having it installed, but also because Flash was a preferred attack vector in 2015. Meanwhile, the widespread usage of software is most likely linked to the fact that we consume more and more data on the computer, and that we access a broader variety of software to do so.

Most likely, your private computer system is not much different from a standard business computer, therefore consumers, as well as companies, should be very aware there is a crucial risk here.

Corporate Security Risks are High

We now know 4 key facts which should have your full attention, since they put you or your corporate data at risk:

1. The top 4 pieces of vulnerable 3rd party software is and has always been vulnerable to attacks

2. Vulnerabilities are severe and there is a high number of them!

3. Most computer systems actually use a minimum of 3 top vulnerable software presented here

4. Cyber criminals commonly exploit and develop attack vectors for these vulnerabilities

Knowing all this, you may think that manufacturers keep us safe by quickly fixing these problems for their users and customers. Well, our analysis indicates that is not the case.

Read Full Article About Heimdal Online Security

Haws
Corporation tempered water Nevada USA, Singapore: Nine Safety Tips for Working
with Formaldehyde

With the various uses of formaldehyde, eye and skin contact is a potential occurrence, therefore a safety shower or eyewash should be provided. Formaldehyde is just one of many chemical substances that could come in contact with the eyes or body, requiring emergency response equipment to be readily available.

Formaldehyde is back in the news now that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has issued a new rule to control formaldehyde emissions from certain products. However, if your facility uses formaldehyde, as an environment, health, and safety (EHS) manager you have been required for a long time to safeguard your workers from formaldehyde exposure under Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) workplace safety requirements. Today we will offer some tips for working safely with formaldehyde.

Formaldehyde is a fairly common chemical substance. It’s used to make clothing, textiles, furniture, and building products. It’s also a by-product of some forms of combustion. Formaldehyde is well known as a preservative in medical laboratories, as an embalming fluid, and as a sterilizer. In addition, OSHA has found that some hair smoothing products may contain formaldehyde, may release formaldehyde at levels above OSHA’s permissible limits during use, and may be mislabeled, all of which can pose health risks to salon workers.

For airborne formaldehyde, the permissible exposure limit (PEL) is just 0.75 parts per million (ppm) of air over an 8-hour time-weighted average. Most protective measures have to be instituted at the OSHA action level of 0.5 ppm for an 8-hour time-weighted average and/or the short-term exposure limit (STEL) of 2 ppm for 15 minutes.

While formaldehyde’s most serious hazards relate to health, there are others. Exposing it to heat or flame can cause a fire or explosion, depending on how much formaldehyde a solution contains. Formaldehyde is also reactive with a number of substances. You risk a violent reaction if you mix it with strong oxidizers. In addition, you’ll get explosive compounds if you mix it with nitrogen oxide, nitromethane, perchloric acid and aniline, or peroxyformic acid.

Nine Tips for Working with Formaldehyde

Tip 1: Identify exposure risks. There are a number of ways to identify potential formaldehyde exposure risks. First, formaldehyde has a pungent odor that’s easy to recognize. It also often causes eye irritation. That’s one identifier, but you can’t depend on it. People often get used to the smell and eye irritation and stop noticing it.

Checking the label and safety data sheet (SDS) before using any substance will also alert you to formaldehyde. At the very least, it will be listed on the label. If the substance can release formaldehyde at levels above 0.5 ppm, the label must list all hazards, including respiratory sensitization and the words “May Cause Cancer.”

Tip 2: Wear the PPE. Always wear the personal protective equipment (PPE) that’s assigned, and inspect it carefully before use. If it gets contaminated, don’t take it home. It has to be cleaned or laundered before reuse. Remove it in the change room, and put it in a container labeled for formaldehyde.

Tip 3: Prevent releases. To prevent formaldehyde releases, OSHA also requires regular container inspections to look for leaks and spills. Potential spill areas have to be designed for containment and decontamination. Only trained, properly equipped people repair leaks and clean up spills. Dispose of contaminated waste and debris in sealed containers with formaldehyde hazard warning labels.

Tip 4: Prevent fires. Formaldehyde is extremely flammable. Do not use near open flames or in places where there is the potential for sparks. Do not smoke in areas where formaldehyde is used. In case of a fire, shut off supply. If possible and there is no risk to surroundings, let the fire burn itself out. In other cases extinguish with powder or carbon dioxide.

Tip 4: Prevent explosions. Formaldehyde mixes well with air and explosive mixtures are formed easily. You can prevent explosions by using formaldehyde only in a closed system with proper ventilation. Make sure the electrical equipment and lighting in areas where formaldehyde is used is explosionproof. In case of a fire in a cylinder holding formaldehyde, you can help avoid an explosion by keeping the cylinder cool by spraying with water.

Tip 5: Respond in case of inhalation. Get a formaldehyde inhalation victim to fresh air immediately. Rescuers must wear self-containing breathing apparatus (SCBA) to enter an area with very high formaldehyde concentrations. Keep the person warm and at rest and give artificial respiration if breathing has stopped. Get immediate medical attention. Serious coughing or upper respiratory irritation may require hospitalization for observation.

Tip 6: Respond in case of ingestion. Give a conscious victim milk or water to dilute the formaldehyde. Keep the person warm and at rest; for vomiting, keep the head below the hips. Get immediate medical attention.

Tip 7: Respond in case of skin contact. Remove contaminated clothing. Shower immediately after skin contact. Rinse with soap and lots of water for at least 15 minutes. Cover a skin or eye burn with a sterile bandage and get immediate medical attention. Also get checked if you have any notable eye or respiratory irritation.

Tip 8: Respond in case of eye contact. Use eyewash immediately after eye contact. Use large amounts of water for at least 15 minutes. Remove contact lenses if easily possible. Get immediate medical attention.

Tip 9: Provide training. OSHA’s formaldehyde standard requires employers to train all employees who are assigned to work areas with the potential for formaldehyde exposure at or above 0.1 ppm. Employees must be trained at the time of initial assignment and at least once a year thereafter. They must also receive training whenever a new exposure to formaldehyde is introduced into the work area.

Coalition
Against Insurance Fraud: Partnering to combat workers-comp schemes

Dollar for dollar, workers-compensation premium scams may be larger than bogus work injury claims. At least that’s what many expert say. And the problem seem to be getting worse, especially in urban centers with deep underground economies.

The Coalition met recently with an unlikely ally in this effort: the United Brotherhood of Carpenters. It represents organized labor in the building trades. The union believes premium-avoidance schemes harm workers and cost governments mightily in lost revenue.

Why lost revenues?

Shady businesses lowball how many workers they have, and their payroll size. They often pay workers in cash, under the table. All of this helps dishonest employers avoid paying full workers-comp premiums, plus a bevy of federal, state and local taxes.

So, governments lose tax revenues. Workers are cheated out of workers- comp protection, wages, overtime, unemployment benefits and Social Security. Honest employers lose business and income because cheaters use the illicit savings to underbid them for contracts. And, workers comp insurers lose premiums.

Our recent meeting with the carpenters union revealed disturbing examples of prominent building jobs that included premium-avoidance schemes: A building at the University of Connecticut, a Florida hospital, construction at the Atlanta airport, and a building at the Walter Reed military hospital complex in suburban Washington, D.C.

The latter hits close to home — I drive by the hospital complex almost daily.

The carpenters’ proposals for comp insurers are a primer on why partnerships could be a great resource to move an anti-fraud agenda forward more decisively:

*Work together on best practices for conducting audits and investigations into premium-avoidance schemes;

*Adopt procedures to red-flag potential premium fraud; and

*Cooperate with stakeholders on investigations.

Workers-comp insurers already appear to be doing much of this. Yet it needs repeating that expanding everyone’s knowledge of schemes is a force multiplier. This will help identify more plots schemes, and boost the entire anti-fraud effort.

Fraud fighters must work with allies to educate state policymakers to better stop costly comp scams — premium avoidance and bogus injury claims.

We can make greater progress by including non-traditional allies such as the carpenters union. The more influential allies that are brought together, the stronger the efforts against comp scams will become.

The carpenters union is a clarion call that effective partnerships will help everyone better combat workers-comp schemes of every kind.

About the author: Howard Goldblatt is director of government affairs for the Coalition Against Insurance Fraud.
