Social determinants impact on migrant/refugees

Social determinants are factors that affect the health and well-being of individuals. Refugees are not only exposed to a number of social determinants in their own country, but are also exposed post migration in Australia. Social determinants affects their physical and mental health.
Income-
Refugees commonly are forced to leave behind most of their personal belongings when they migrate to Australia due to the horrible conditions they travel and live in for long periods of time. Documents regarding education and qualifications are often left behind, making it extremely hard for refugees to get a job or some from of employment opportunity. Having no job or stable income set individuals and families back as they are not able to afford adequate housing, food and education/childcare for their children. Many refugees arrive to Australia in a state of poverty and they can remain in that situation for years (Hynie, 2017). This affects refugees mental health majorly as they don't have any economic opportunity for work, employment or a socioeconomic status (Hynie, 2017).
Housing-
Due to poverty that refugees are subjected too, as mentioned above, it can result in inadequate housing among refugees in Australia. Overcrowding is a common example of inadequate housing but there are also risk factors such as poor building structure that can contribute to inadequate housing. Refugees are commonly resettled into poor quality housing and due to their low income, it is difficult for refugees to pay for the housing they currently have or find more adequate housing to avoid health risks (Hynie, 2017). Housing policies such as down payments and reference letters further limit refugees along with discrimination excluding them from safer suburbs (Hynie, 2017). This affects refugees mental health negatively by causing stress to those who are unable to provide an adequate and safe house for their family due to low income (Hynie, 2017).
Discrimination-
Refugees are subjected to discrimination due to the stigma about refugees migrating illegally, but in fact this stigma is very outdated and everyone should have a right to seek asylum away from a country that is dangerous to continue living in. Even though it's very much legal to migrate, some people have a hard time excepting. Discrimination can cause refugees challenges when trying to get a house, find a job and even get an education. Refugees are either welcomed and accepted or on the other hand, experience hostility after migrating to Australia (Hynie, 2017). When refugees experience frequent discrimination, it can cause stress, anxiety and depression (Hynie, 2017). Refugee youth experience recurrent discrimination at school and this is a large factor effecting their non-completion of secondary school, which futhermore creating difficulty getting a job and stable income (Hynie, 2017).

References list:

Hynie, M.
Refugee health issues

When refugees migrate to Australia, there are many health issues they present with. This can be due to the poor quality of health care in their origin country or health issues that developed as they made their journey. Below are some health issues for refugees migrating from Iran to Australia
Iron deficiency-
Iron deficiency is when the body is not storing enough iron. Some causes for not having enough iron in a diet is due to inadequate access to food and prolonged food deprivation (Australian Refugee Health, n.d.) Iron deficiency is very prevalent is Iran especially among children aged 2-12 (Administrator, n.d.). Refugees, importantly children and pregnant woman coming to Australia from Iran, should undergo a full blood screening to identify iron deficiency and then be treated with iron supplement tablets or an iron infusion if the deficiency is severe.
Cardiovascular disease (CVD)-
CVD is an umbrella term for many diseases that affect the heart and blood vessels. Nutrition and physical health are some factors contributing to the development of CVD, which is extremely prevalent in Iran and their leading cause of death (Australian Refugee Health, n.d.). Treatment options for CVD range from medications to surgery depending on the type of CVD and the severity (Felman, 2023).
Immunisations-
Routine immunisations are something we are very privileged to have in Australia as other countries have fewer immunisations or less access to them (Australian Refugee Health, n.d.). Refugees arriving to Australia from Iran are typically under-immunised or unimmunised due to Iran immunising against less diseases compared to Australia (Moradi‐Lakeh & Esteghamati, n.d.). Refugees should have a serology test done upon arrival to Australia to check immunity to diseases and be vaccinated so they are up to date with Australia's immunisation schedule (Australian Refugee Health, n.d.).

References used:
Administrator.
