These include the belief that exposure to English will result in increased English fluency, all ELLs learn English in the same way and at the same rate, and effective instruction means nonverbal support. However, these misconceptions do not equal effective pedagogy, particularly for ELL students. To effectively teach ELLs, we must first recognize the acquiring of a second language as a process. Additionally, we must recognize it as a process that is unique from the acquiring of a native language. It is important to recognize the similarities and differences of each, in order to cater to them. Once this is realized, educators can serve their ELL students by doing the following: ensure that tasks are appropriate for ELLs according to their language skills, recognize the language structure and demands in cooperative activities so that ELLs can participate.
