In the early 1800's mysteriously there was a leprosy outbreak in Hawaii. Leprosy is a deadly disease that is highly contagious and at the time was incurable. In an effort to battle the spread of leprosy through Hawaii King Kamehameha V banished all affected to be isolated at Kalaupapa for life. The picture above is a few of the people sent to live in exile.

Why Quarantine at Kalaupapa

Kalaupapa was chosen as the quarantine location because the peninsula was remote and fairly inaccessible, being located in the far north. The area to the south was cut off by a sheer cliff reaching approximately 2,000ft, with the ocean covering the rest of the area to the east, north, and west. The only viable way to get to this part of the island is by boat, and due to the currents and rocks, conditions must be perfect to sail here. Along with its location, this was an ideal place to quarantine people because the part of the island had previously been inhabited by Native Hawaiians, making the grounds good for farming, and there being a viable water source. Though this description of the land may not seem too bad, what these people had to go through is tragic. Most people were too ill and demoralized to be self-sufficient, ultimately all these people were simply left here to die.
