Confirmation provides the most assistance in a lesson. Teachers provide students with a lot more resources to help them develop an understanding of scientific methods.
Structured provides less than confirmation as they are given more space to collect data and information towards questioning and being a better scientist.
Guided provides much less intervention. Teacher only provides a question and allows students to discover their own methods and findings.
Open is minimal intervention. The teacher guides, but really only observes. Students take on full role of "scientist" as they engage in every step of the scientific process.

Confirmation- Students are led by teacher to confirm beliefs and knowledge previously learned. Can be used to help students practice specific skills pertaining to inquiry.

Structured- Students are given the question and procedure but will generate explanation from evidence they collect. Commonly used in elementary skills.

Guided- Students design a procedure to test experiment after they are given the research question. Teacher is still guiding students learning to practice inquiry skills.

Open- This is the most independent and highest level of inquiry. Students are required to formulate their own scientific reasoning. This is more successful in higher elementary grades.
