It's a strange place to be from - most people who know it will visit for a day or two to enjoy the beach. I hated it growing up. There was nothing to do but go on walks, it was hard to meet other people like me and it was too small to navigate without being afraid of bumping into someone I knew.

I got bullied for being different, for being awkward, for not presenting or acting how a girl "should" but online I found many many other people like me. And while I had to shrink myself in my town and in my school so as not to draw unwanted attention, I could blossom online. I was free to experiment, to explore my identity, to speak my mind, to vent, and to build friendships with people who understood me. It was a revelation just to discover that I wasn't alone in my otherness. It was easy to disappear into online spaces like tumblr and to just not bother with the real world.

There were a couple of real-life places in my town that I could escape to though: the woods and the rock pools. Even on a sunny day when the beach is flooded with people, the rock pools are always quiet but beautiful and full of wildlife. While I'm not so afraid to exist in my town anymore, the rock pools will always be a sacred space to me. Being able to learn from others and their experiences is powerful. And I like the idea of a space that is curated in a way that is informative and empowering without being too dense or overwhelming or cold. I think this space is a great example of that. Being able to read the essays here - on subjects such as intersectionality - it feels like wandering the shelves of a library, with the option to pick up, thumb through and put down books as you please, in your own time.
