Target Audience
The primary target audience for the trailer would be for males and females aged 15-35 (iit is classified as 15 by the BBFC). As the film is a thriller it would appeal to both males and females because of the female lead role within the film but also the psychological element has a general target audience. The film is based of of the book, so it means that the film has already got an audience who would want to see the film to see how the story differentiates from the book.

Narrative/ Structure

The narrative for the is muddled in terms of relating it to Todorov's narrative theory. This is possibly because it is difficult for the audience to see when the disruption happens because there inst on obvious moment - the overall tone doesn't change frequently within the trailer. This uncertainty is common in thriller films and creates an exciting trailer as it leaves the audience slightly confused but manages to hook them in because they want to watch the whole film to find out the answer's to their questions.

The final shot of the trailer is a wide shot of the main female character stood on a train platform, the shot shows a train going past to reveal the female character stood facing the camera. She is positioned to the far right showing that she had been weakened as she is not the center focus anymore. She is stood up straight, emotionless denoting her looking slightly sinister portraying the narrative as having psychological damage on her, giving it a twisted feel to it.

Mise-En-Scene

The mise en scene of the trailer is stereotypical of the thriller genre as it is all used in order to create darker, more serious atmosphere which leaves the audience feeling nervous. In the trailer a woodland location is frequently used, it is conventional along with the use of low-key lighting as it adds a feeling of dystopia to the trailer. The woodland location is established using a wide shot, the open woodland location increases the sinister feel of the trailer, keeping the audience on edge. We see a crime scene in the woodland - shown by the yellow tape wrapped around the trees - showing that it will be a main point of interest in the film because it shows that something serious has occurred there. The low key lighting used, creates a mysterious atmosphere because it emphasizes the colour black (with a gloomy white tint), connoting evil and what has happened there was horrific.

Sound

The trailer begins with a wind-like sound effect, the use of the sound effect instantly creates an ominous feel to the trailer as it has a . The sound effect is ironically calm feel to it followed up with dialogue from one of the female characters speaking. This voiceover represents the female as being hidden as we dont know who she is and what significance she has in this moment of time. In the background of the dialogue is a non diegetic sound of a piano playing, this enhances the mysterious tone to the trailer and gives it the sinister feeling that it's trying to create. A high pitch sound of a train screeching to a halt is used to signify the disruption and the screeching sound can also be associated with horror because the actual sound can catch the audience by surprise because it is a big pitch switch from the calm, ambient sound in the background. Heartless by Kanye West is played throughout the rest of the trailer. It is a slowed down version of his song. The reason for this could either be for copyright reasons (but it is distributed by Universal so it is most likely that they would've gained the rights) or because by slowing down the bpm it keeps the audience merely relaxed, so another unexpected climax (which are popular in thriller films) can catch the audience by surprise.

Editing

Throughout the trailer we witness a variety of quick cuts. Stereo-typically, These are built up as the trailer progresses, and also builds up the tension along with it until a climax which keeps the audience wanting to wait. The cuts increase in speed until when the disruption occurs (around 41 seconds into) - the shot shows a medium shot of a woman on a train, rushing somewhere. Another close-up shot is show where she is desperately trying to look out of the window, signifying that she has seen something shocking which hints towards the narrative.

A second editing technique used throughout the trailer is fade to blacks, the colour black has connotations of darkness which relates to the thriller narrative that the trailer contains. Another use for the fades are to denote a passing of time, so it could show that the film is set over a long period of time - maybe the disappearance of the woman was a while before the present setting of the film, possibly meaning something (or someone) in the present has done something to bring back this narrative. The fade to black are also used in particular to denote endings to certain sections of the narrative so that the trailer can progress onto a new section of the narrative. This is a common convention within the thriller genre because it is effective in making the audience unsure as to what is going to come next.

The trailer is edited in a montage layout, where the scenes are not in chronological order. The enabels the audience to gain relationships between the different characters while also experiencing the main parts of the narrative as well. This also helps the trailer to not give away too much of the narrative so that the audience would have a brief idea, with some gaps (which they would fill when watching the whole film). This is shown around 1 minute 16 where a shot of a male and female character in a car with one another fading into a shot of a train track, the frequent feature of trains within the trailer hint that they are a significant part of the narrative as they feature in the titles and trailer itself.

Camera Angles

Towards the end of the trailer an wide long shot is used of the moon fading back towards the distance. The shot is contrasted between black and white giving it an ominous look suggesting that something bad is going to happen within the narrative; by ending the trailer with a showing of the location it can help to leave the audience on a cliff-hanger. The shot features another woodland setting which are shown frequently in the trailer, making the trailer feel mysterious as the audience don't know at this point why the woodland is feature so often.
There is also a low angled shot of a woman holing a baby, the woman has a shocked facial expression signifying that she is weak or broken at that moment in time. Also the fact that she is alone represents her as being more vulnerable as, creating empathy from the audience to this character as parents can relate as she is a parent trying to protect her child.

In order to show the vulnerability of the main female character, a close up shot of her face is used. This is very conventional within the genre because the close up shot can help to express the emotions of that character to the audience, allowing the to feel more engaged with the situations of the characters when watching.

When representing one of the female characters as being secretive, an over the shoulder is used to highlight her daily activities. However the over the shoulder shot is interrupted by a group of people looking at the female character. The shot is blurry to begin with then focuses to show 4 females looking at the character, the narrative gives no hint as to why they would do this meaning that this character is very important to the plot. The over-the-shoulder shot can also show that she could be hiding her identity, as we see more of her actions rather than herself, which could also relate to her being a very secretive character. The blurred shot represents the females life not being as clear as the audience might think, denoting that she might be a surprise to the audience in the future.

The titles for the film is stereotypical in most trailers as they occur at the end of the trailer and are the last shot that the audience sees. For this film trailer, the titles are fairly simple as it is a thin white font on a black background; the colour black signifies evil and denotes that the trailer does not have a resolution within the narrative. The font is not align with each other, representing the personality of the main female character, the audience will feel as if there is something missing with her because her persona changes frequently within the trailer. Throughout the rest of the trailer, the titles are reversed as it is a white background with a black font, the white background has connotations of innocence which relates to the female who goes missing in the trailer.
