László Moholy-Nagy was a Hungarian painter and photographer who taught in the school of Bauhaus. He was highly influenced by constructivism as well as a strong advocate of the integration of technology and industry into the arts.

László moholy-nagy's most common style of photography is called the photogram. A photogram is a photographic image made without a camera by placing objects directly onto the surface of a light-sensitive material such as photographic paper and then exposing it to light. This style often gives the effect of a shadowy image with different tones based on object transparency. Unexposed areas stay white, partly exposed areas turn gray, and fully exposed areas become black.

Looking at a lot of his works, it seems like Laszlo could be talking about photography conveying a feeling or a mood. He photographs his subjects with a deep mental space. We look at his images and may not understand what we are looking at but we feel something from it nonetheless. He captures an abstract view of his subject that can cause us to also think abstractly. I think he could also be referring to the act of creating an image rather than capturing something that is already in front of us (like the use of the photogram).

Black and white photography is an extension of the eye in that it allows us to see things in a different way. Our eyes don't notice the emphasis of lighting and contrast in real life colour as much as they do in black and white. Taking away the distraction of colour allows us to see things with entirely new meanings.

I really love the work of Sally Mann. I feel that she really captures the essence of humanity in her work. This photo stood out to me immediately because I just think it is so beautiful in displaying womanhood. I see this image as a grandmother, mother, and her daughter. I like that the imperfections of the eldest woman are on display. These "imperfections" are seen through black and white in a different light because of the lighting and contrast showing more that colour would have the capacity to. I think it says something how the granddaughter is being held while the daughter is not and is seen in a darker light. The mental space for all her photos are so deep that I could just stare at them all day and find some sort of comment on what it is to be human at its rawest form.

This is Elliott Erwitt. I really like his photography as there are so many genres he captures. He does contemporary, photojournalism, and takes candid photos of ironic and absurd situations within everyday settings. His photos also capture the human experience and society. A lot of his photos involve dogs and making them appear as humans. I'm not sure if this is supposed to be quirky and fun but I can see it as a play on the human condition comparing man to dogs.

I like the work of Henri Cartier Bresson because he is really good at dimension in photography. He often uses a low shutter speed and has a subject out of focus. I like that he often has many lines in frame that guide the eyes around the photo. His use of light, shadow, and contrast add a lot to his works. His pieces always have a very deep mental space as they all have something to say due to his genre of photojournalism.

Our cameras today can accomplish way more than they used to be able to. With the advancement of the iphone or smartphone, we can have a quality colour camera with 25x zoom and even depth of field control in our pockets. This could drastically change the way we value photography and especially the amount of care we put into our photos. We don't have to learn as much about cameras as our phones handle the settings for us. Our actual cameras can have the capacity to give us a view into space. we can capture stars and planets, subjects that never could have been captured or phathomed when the camera was first developed. Photography can be more candid in nature now as a moment can be captured in an instant and shown with the exact colours that were seen in that moment. Because of this development photography is much less staged.

A continuous tone image allows colors at any point to transition smoothly between shades, without relying on discrete elements like halftones or individual pixels. This differs from other media in that the colour choices are unlimited like with painting. Other media like print or something else only have a select tonal range to choose from. Other media may rely on pixels or halftones to transition from shade to shade.

These could include what is shown in the photo or a bullet going through something.

Astro photography has opened up a universe to human vision through the ability to capture aspects of space and time in a single photograph. There are pictures of galaxies capturing way more than our eyes can. This gives everyone an opportunity to see into the universe from their own lens. This photo is even cooler to me because it was taken over time so all the stars had moved as the world spinned. Another remarkable element of photography.

I love this photo for abstract seeing because from a distance it is hard to tell what it could be but after looking for a little we can assume that it is water. I love the hints of colour woven through the image and the amount of textures that are captured by the motion of the picture despite it being a still shot. This is a very active frame because I just want to see what is beyond it and what is creating the ripples or what is reflecting on the surface.

It is taken from an angle that looks like the eye of the photographer. I really like the colours in the photo and how it takes us all the space.

Looking at a lot of the images that could be a form of rapid seeing, there is a lot of water splashes and slow motion breaking glass. I find all of those fascinating but they do nothing for me besides provide a different lens into sight. This photo however, captures my attention as it is a real person with real motion. I have done dance since I was three but had to quit 3 years ago because of injuries so looking at a photo of dance touches something in my heart. The contrast of the colours is really eye catching and her legs move our eyes around the frame. The orange of her silks above the blue of the water makes her look like she is replacing the sun. I just love how dynamic but real this photo is.

I like that all the tones are muted and all orderly. The effects of the long exposure can be seen in the stars as well as on the road which makes this photo feel more complete or tied together in a way. I appreciate how the light can be seen from behind the piece of the cliff that covers it.

This photo reminds me of the teenage mutant ninja turtles. That and the fact that I still cannot figure out what is happening no matter how long I look, are the reasons I chose this photograph. I couldn't find a lot of mechanical or chemical manipulated photos but I chose this one because I just couldn't figure it out.

Photography stands out by capturing moments in time, freezing what might otherwise be lost. Unlike painting or sculpture, it shows real-life scenes while still allowing creativity through framing and editing. Light plays a key role, making it different from other art forms. Photography is accessible and portable, with anyone able to create and share images instantly. It preserves memories, sparks nostalgia, and offers a unique way to see the world. Unlike film, it focuses on stillness rather than movement, helping both photographers and viewers appreciate fleeting details and quiet moments.

We can kind of see that it is a bus and maybe a blur of traffic which could be read into more if you resonate with that but I think this way of capturing a photo is a new experience

Photography Literacy

Being “literate” in photography means knowing how to understand and create meaningful pictures. It’s about recognizing how things like lighting, color, composition, and angles can tell a story or show emotion. It also means being able to look at a photo and think about what it’s trying to say, who it’s for, and why it was taken. On the creative side, it’s about knowing how to use a camera, adjust settings, and make choices that help communicate your ideas. Basically, it’s about both understanding photos and being able to make your own that matter.

This is the day by Leonard Freed is a series that touched me dramatically. He has a lot of works that represent black life in america. In his description, Freed says, "Ultimately, photography is about who you are. It's the seeking of truth in relation to yourself. And seeking truth becomes a habit." This is quite impactful coming from a black man capturing a part of his history to share with those who weren't there or can't imagine what it was like in that time. This series includes a woman fighting for her rights making a statement, people joined together, and a crowd stretched across a rail. All of these photos were taken on the day Martin Luther King gave his famous "I have a dream" speech.Seeing images like this in this form of photojournalism changes photography and uses it to capture an experience, bring awareness, and gives us an eye into the passion of that time.
