Pre-revolutionary Iran was a complicated time, one that included much change and conflict. Reza Shah and his son, Mohammed Reza Shah, the leaders of the Pahlavi regime, were trying to introduce modernity into Iran, as Ataturk did in Turkey. Many of their reforms centered around women, placing them in the public eye.

Shah regime was seen to be oppressive and irrational with its policies, especially the one’s he took regarding the economy.

In mid 1960s, Iran was going through a great recession. Inflation was at it’s lowest, and deflation was high. A major contributor to this was the fall in the wages of unskilled labourers, which laid ground for political unrest.

Urbanization and industrialization was also increasing rapidly, with 50% of the population living in semi-urban or urban areas by 1978.

Rapid industrialization clubbed with increase in oil price gave the regime a message to rationalize the economy, but instead the Shah hastily expanded the industrial sector with greater reliance on foreign experts and imported workers. This laid the groundwork for the revolution of 1978.

They
would dress upjust like their Western counterparts and would even show some skin. These old magazine scans give us a rough idea of what a woman could wear at that time.

Today the women’s dress code in Iran is way more conservative than back in the ‘70s; now, they need to cover their hair, necks, and arms.

--> The father or the husband is the head of the family. He holds authority over women, children and property. He even controls what the children study and how they act.
--> The culture is adult oriented with parents making major decisions for their children such as whom they should marry and what profession they should choose.
--> Families are extended, and sometimes all the members stay in the same house.
--> For Iranians having children is a blessing.
--> Traditionally boys were preferred over girls. The physician delivering baby boys was paid twice as much in terms of rations and wages.
--> Quite often the gender of the newborn would decide the status and position of the mother in the household, especially if the husband had more than one wife.
