One of the most important purposes of the internet is to connect people, but what's happening today is the opposite. That instead of connecting us, it separates us from people who are actually in front of us.

The title of the speech was "Connected, but alone?", it was all about how we communicate with other people but also being alone at the same time. In the title, there was a question mark but relating to my everyday life, it's a statement. I can completely relate when Sherry Turkle said "being with each other but also elsewhere" and at the same time, I am also guilty of this. Most of the time my friends and I eat lunch together, but we barely talk to each other or talk about ourselves, we are all busy checking our social media accounts or chatting with other friends elsewhere. We are busy taking pictures of our foods instead of talking about how good it was or how salty the food is, too busy editing our pictures to look good in social media instead of talking about ourselves because honestly, we have been friends for almost a year but we don't even know the date of each other's birthdays.
Then it makes me wonder, what does social media can give that people around us can't? With Sherry's speech, my question was answered, it listens and it gives us time to be perfect the way we want our answers to be. We can edit or we can ignore, we can even remove any time we want to, comparing when we talk to each other in actual we can't take back what has been said and ignore what has been asked. I agree that one of the reasons why most of the people nowadays prefer to live in the virtual world than reality is because no one is listening, but I also believe that it's also because we live in a world full of judgments. We are afraid to make a mistake and be judged when our grammar is wrong or when we mispronounced a word or our opinion might be uninteresting. One of my friends told me that when she was young she doesn't order steak in the restaurant because she does not know how it was properly pronounced and her companions might laugh at her.

The way we react to other people's thoughts is also important, that most of the time it makes them prefer to be alone or not to talk at all. It seems like the internet connects us, but the truth is it does not, it just makes us feel perfect in the world of imperfections. The internet can indeed connect us to thousands of people, but sometimes we don't need thousands, most of the time we only need one.
