Learning to Play the Guitar Week 3

1. Your name, matric number, date
Name: Emil Kong Dern Yao
Matric No.: A180960
Date: 8 Aug 2023

2. Your progress so far
I’m glad that I was making progress in playing the scales, the ‘GA BCD EFG’ using the first three strings. Compared to last week, I was more confident and competent in playing them, seen in me playing them really fast in my free time.

But at the same time, I can see that I’m not learning as fast now. Perhaps the ‘beginner’s mindset’ is gone? While I was at my guitar class this past week, I learnt a new scale using the last three strings, also known as the 'bass strings'; so played together with the first 3 strings they form the ‘C major scale’ How exciting, right?! It truly is. Yet, in the midst of all this excitement, I find it extremely difficult to play all of them together. Perhaps I’m not used to using my thumb to pluck the strings. Anyways, I’m not giving up just yet.

Also, because I now have been taught the ‘C major scale’ that basically means I can play even more songs now! A new song that was taught to me was ‘Silent Night’, another Christmas classic. I can’t wait to master this song so that I can play it during the festive season.

3. Your feelings and thoughts
I feel I'm at a stage where I'm getting used to the basics now. Everything seems smooth thus far.

However, I also don't want to be too laxed lest I take my lessons for granted. Why I say that is because the tension and excitement that I've felt in the 1st week is not as strong now. Yet, hope is what keep me looking forward to a future where I can be, at least, a competent Guitar player.

Hence, I still to feel that 'beginner's mindset' so that I can learnt as much as possible, as fast as possible.

4. How did you learn and apply the skill of decision making in your EP journey?
I guess you can say I've used my decision making skill in the choosing of what Elective to best benefit me during the holiday. There were many choices that I wanted to choose from, for example, learning public speaking, learning to do marketing, learning to scuba dive; but ultimately, I've gone with something that engages the mind, from an art's point of view, hence, the reason why I to learn an musical instrument. Again, there's lot's of instruments out there, and I've decided to gone for the Guitar. Why because it's light, easier to bring around and the most versatile in playing many kinds of songs.

5. How did you manage your time throughout this EP journey?
I would say I utilised my time well in my Elective posting. Part of the reason why I say that is because I created a timetable and adhered to it strictly. I would set aside a minimum of 10 hour weekly, just for my own practice time. I would practice all that was taught during the lessons and just devote myself to the training.

Another reason that I've reflected is that because I know that I won't be having the luxury of holidays when the new semester starts, I realised time is precious now. Thus, I even outside of my dedicated time to practice the Guitar, I would still play and practice it regardless.

6. Your plan for next week (Week 4)
Since next week is the final week of our EP, I plan to consolidate everything that I've learnt thus far and wrap it up in terms of the theory and practical side of things.

I would like to start practising the songs that I've learnt and pick one to play for the final 8-minute video summary of our Elective Posting.

The Piano Project Week 3

1. Your name, matric number, date
Name: Lee Kong Heng
Matric No.: A182323
Date: 12 Aug 2023

2. Your progress so far
For this week, I have learned some new scales, which are A minor, E minor and D minor. Minor scales are harder than major scales, as there are 2 types of minor scales, the harmonic scale and the melodic scale. The harmonic minor scale is a natural minor scale with a seventh degree raised by one semitone. The melodic minor scale is a natural minor scale with the sixth and seventh degrees raised by one semitone in the ascending scale.

As I mentioned last week, I wished that I could play something jazzy, and here it is, "Fly Me to the Moon" by Frank Sinatra. It is quite a long piece and requires quite some time for me to recognize the notes as it consists of a lot of accidentals. I only managed to practice the first 2 pages of the piano sheet.

3. Your feelings and thoughts
I felt very happy as I finally learn something that I've always wanted to learn which is jazz music. However, just from the look of this song, it's definitely quite a big challenge for me. I always felt excited because next week is the time when I will play all the songs that I have learned throughout these 4 weeks.

4. How did you learn and apply the skill of decision-making in your EP journey?
There's not much I could use this skill in learning the piano, probably in choosing which elective posting I should do. I think it is quite difficult to choose whether to do my elective locally or to go overseas. Considering all the factors such as in terms of time, financial status, etc., I decided to do it locally. And also, I think I have also applied decision-making skills in choosing which musical instruments I am interested in. As I mentioned, there are a few musical instruments for me to choose from, including piano, guitar, drumset, etc. There are a few factors influencing my choice as well, including the tutor's recommendations and also the price of the instrument. After considering every factor, I decide to choose piano as my main subject in elective posting.

5. How did you manage your time throughout this EP journey?
I think managing the time for this elective is not that hard, as now is the holiday for all year 3 medical students. I just need to come to the class on the dates scheduled for 3 hours per class, one and a half hours will be a teaching session and another half will be a self-practicing session. In my other free time, I would just go online and search for some piano sheets to practice my note recognition skill.

6. Your plan for next week (Week 4)
For week 4, I would like to finish off the last piece for this elective posting. I would also record all the performances and compile them into the final presentation in an 8-minute video.

Your progress so far

I improved my communication with my customer. I can convince my customers to buy the product from my outlet such as beverages, snacks and my main product which is waffles. I also can chat with them on some local issues. Other than that, I also promote the facilities of the park such as the petting zoo, boat riding on the beautiful lake. Last week I planned to make a new filling, so I started to sell the waffle with pineapple jam.

3. Your feelings and thoughts

At first I thought making a new filling was a good idea, but it turns out my customers do not prefer the filling. They prefer the original waffle which is strawberry and chocolate. I enjoyed working here because the scenery here is so beautiful and relaxing. I can hear the sound of the birds chirping in the morning and see the movement of water in the lake.

4. How did you learn and apply the skill of decision making in your EP journey?

I think the skill of decision making is during choosing which elective posting I should do. Because my first choice is to go overseas since I really want to learn about other countries' cultures, food and lifestyle. But considering factors such as financial status, time and others I had chosen to do EP locally. Even though there is an application for sponsorship for going overseas, I think I still need to topup my own money. And I have decided to work because I never have any experience of working.

5. How did you manage your time throughout this EP journey?

I start my task around 8:30 in the morning. After arranging all the beverages and snacks, I continue making waffles until lunch time. After lunch, around 2 pm I continued working in the shop. I stopped at about 4:30 pm. In my free time. I help the other staff sweeping the floor and cleaning the rack.

6.

1. Your name, matric number, date

Name: Nurul Iffah Jihan binti Hairunizam

Matric number: A180801

Date: 13rd August 2023

2. Your progress so far

I'm able to manage my time and tasks well after 2 weeks working. Communicating with customers is one of the challenges for this week but everything went smoothly. We have a lot of new customers this week and they're unfamiliar with the menu. My explanation helps them to choose the menu and I also receive feedback that they like the food they choose.

This week's objective was for me to also communicate with suppliers and check for the coming items to make sure every order arrived. Other than special occasions, all workers in different sections will still list out their order during closing hours for the manager to make order for the next opening day. Every item will arrive early in the morning and I need to be alert of the items.

3. Your feelings and thoughts

I was excited to gain new knowledge of how a restaurant actually works which is the opposite of how i thought it is. I was amazed at how the manager was very particular about the food quality. Communicating with suppliers also made me realize how important it is to sustain a good relationship with customers and coworkers as some of them share their experience of working as suppliers. It is no different than talking with customers as they are also working and have their own experiences and they are kind enough to share with me in a short period of time.

4. How did you learn and apply the skill of decision making in your EP journey?

Skills of decision making actually applied when I was in doubt of when I should start the elective posting. We were given a post exam break earlier before the elective posting date and there was also a gap for those who needed to sit for repeat posting. Rather than sitting around, I decided to start my elective posting earlier than the date to gain more benefits of the course.

For week 3, despite the task to communicate more with the customers and arrange orders with suppliers, I was still assigned in the food preparation (food plating) section. There were a couple of orders that were missed during peak hours and deciding which food should be prepared first was hard but thankfully there was also takeaway order in line. I learnt to prioritize the orders that were missed and do the takeaway order after I finished it.

5. How did you manage your time throughout this EP journey?

I believe I'm able to adjust myself with the pace of other coworkers and at the same time, I also received help from others. We were given breaks during working hours and when I'm taking my break, the other worker will fill in my position to make sure I get enough breaks and we do the same for each other.

6. Your plan for next week (Week 4)

My plan for week 4 is to maintain the pace and the relationship with my coworkers. Since it will be the last week, I hope I can do my best and help the other workers.

1. Your name, matric number, date

Mohamad Raihan bin Kamaruddin

A184221

13th August 2023

2. Your progress so far

So far for this 3rd week I get to experience on how to prepare food. I tried making fried noodle and fried rice which turn out to be fine. Besides I also try to be a cashier which is not much of a hassle but I still need to look at the menu for the prices. Next I also became a waiter every once in a while.

Basically, this week thought me to multi-task at its finest. I need to do quite a number of job at one time and surprisingly I kind of enjoying the process. I’m the kind of person who prefer to do something instead of relaxing and not doing anything so I don’t mind doing a lot of job at one time because it’ll kill time faster and I won’t be bored.

3. Your feelings and thoughts

I felt content because as I’m new my skills is not that great yet but all the workers there are helpful and most of them are kind enough to teach me instead of scolding me. Besides, I’m still as excited as I was during the first week mostly because I’m doing something that I actually enjoy. I never thought working at a restaurant will give me much joy and new friends but at the end it made me realise that we can only know what we love by doing it.

4. How did you learn and apply the skill of decision making in your EP journey?

Throughout my elective posting (EP) journey I believed there’s a lot of time I applied decision making skill. First of all is when I want to choose what to do for my EP itself. Although at first I don’t really have a clear picture of what I want to do for my elective posting, but I take into account about the financial status, transport and what’s easy for me and finalized my EP with working at a restaurant. With no experience in working at all I choose to work at a restaurant because it’s something that I have been wanted to try since a long time.

Next is when I work itself there’s a lot of time where I had to handle customers so that they won’t get angry which require high decision making skills for example I need to make sure that the order is pass through to the kitchen, I also need to make sure that the order are correct and the customers get their food as fast as possible.

5. How did you manage your time throughout this EP journey?

I manage my time well by making my own time table, where every single morning when I wake up I’ll divide my time accordingly. I’ll spend around 1 hour travel back and forth from my house and the restaurant and I’ll be working for around 4 to 5 hours. After that I’ll spend around 45 minutes to 1 hour doing exercise. This EP thought me to manage my time well which I’m able to cope with well since the first week.

6. Your plan for next week (Week 4)

For week 4 I’ll be doing all the job that I’ve learned since week 1. I’ll try my best to juggle between being the chef, waiter, cashier and making drinks.

I’ll also start to prepare my poster as next week will be my last week of EP.

Progress So Far:
Over these three weeks, I've delved into the world of flute playing with enthusiasm and dedication. From the very beginning, I've been introduced to the fundamental techniques and skills that lay the groundwork for proficient flute performance. I've learned about breath control, embouchure, finger placement, and articulation, among other essential elements.

I've also had the privilege of being part of an online community of fellow learners, where we share our achievements, challenges, and insights. The course materials have been comprehensive and engaging, allowing me to understand the nuances of flute playing step by step.

3. Feelings and Thoughts:
This journey has been a captivating blend of emotions and thoughts. The initial excitement of embarking on a new musical pursuit was soon met with the realization that mastering the flute requires patience and persistent effort. There were moments of frustration when I struggled to produce the desired tones or execute complex techniques. However, these challenges have only fueled my determination to improve.

The satisfaction of hitting the right note, the joy of a melodious sequence, and the sense of accomplishment after each practice session have made this journey incredibly fulfilling. I'm grateful for the opportunity to learn a musical instrument that has been both challenging and immensely rewarding.

4. Application of Decision-Making Skills:
In the context of this EP journey, decision-making has become an integral skill. From selecting the optimal practice schedule to prioritizing specific techniques for focused improvement, I've learned to make informed decisions that align with my learning objectives. I've also had to choose pieces of music that match my current skill level, allowing for gradual progression.

This skill of decision-making has transcended the realm of flute playing and permeated other aspects of my life. It has improved my ability to assess situations, set achievable goals, and adapt my approach as needed.

5. Time Management Strategies:
Effectively managing my time has been a cornerstone of my progress in this course. I've implemented various strategies to ensure that I make the most of my practice sessions while juggling other responsibilities. Creating a structured practice routine, setting specific goals for each session, and using digital tools to track my progress have all contributed to my productivity.

By setting aside dedicated time for practice, coursework, and personal commitments, I've been able to strike a balance that allows for consistent improvement without neglecting other areas of my life.

6. Plan for Week 4:
As I approach Week 4 of this course, I'm eager to build upon the foundation I've established. In the upcoming week, my plan is to focus on refining the techniques I've learned so far. I'll spend time honing my embouchure and working on smoother transitions between notes. Additionally, I'm excited to delve into music theory concepts that will deepen my understanding of the music I'm playing.

In the realm of repertoire, I aim to take on a slightly more challenging piece that will push my boundaries while remaining within the realm of my current abilities. By embracing new challenges and seeking growth opportunities, I intend to make Week 4 a pivotal phase of my musical journey.

In conclusion, this flute learning course has been an enlightening experience that has enriched my musical understanding and skills. The blend of technical learning, decision-making, time management, and personal reflection has provided a holistic educational journey. As I look ahead to the next weeks, I'm enthusiastic about the continuous growth and development that await me.

Ukulele Week 3 - Minuette

1. Your name, matric number, date
Ahmad Saqif bin Nazib
A180985
16th August 2023

2. Your progress so far
During the third week, I continued practicing I'm yours by Jason Mraz. At this point, I'm already used to the strumming patterns as well as the tuning and the chords. My fluidity in changing from one chord to another becomes better. Mr. Jason also commented on how fast I was learning though it could also be because of my piano background hence I could read music sheet scores easier.

While still practicing the pop song, Mr. Jason introduced me to a more trickier fingerstyle solo song, Minuette. It is a classic song but improvised on the ukulele. I took my time analyzing the sheet score then started playing it. Took me no time at all to play it very smoothly. I only needed to work on the tempo and the small mistakes I was making. Overall, simply to say now, I can properly read a ukulele music score while playing, which is big achievement I must say. My fingers are getting more fluid and hurts less.

3. Your feelings and thoughts
For week 3, I felt more excited and enthusiastic. This is due to all the visible progress that I am seeing. I felt like I could learn more things though, as soon as Mr. Jason introduced me to the new song, I am aware there is still so much to learn.
I also felt slightly exhausted from the driving I had to do, and the practicing is quite tiring since there were only small gaps in between practices that I could portray what I have progressed to Mr. Jason. Especially when Mr. Jason is in the room with me, he would ask me to repeat the same notes over and over again in order for me to perfectly play it. Tiring but in the end, satisfying. Even so, I never felt like quitting at all and persevered through the week

4. How did you learn and apply the skill of decision making in your EP journey?
When it comes to decision in playing the ukulele, there are two things. Decide when to practice, and when playing deciding where to place my fingers next. Both require me to; one, properly choosing time to ensure I don't interrupt my other daily activities and to maximize practice; and two, immediate and fast decision making. I need to think fast, to not stutter during playing. Otherwise, the song would likely sound unpleasant. Decision that allow me to think for a reasonable amount of time and decisions that only gave me a split second to give a reaction. In my opinion, those two a crucial aspects in decision making, that I've applied in my EP journey

5. How did you manage your time throughout this EP journey?
My classes have 1 and 3 day intervals, hence time to practice is really scarce. Therefore, I waste no time after class, and start practicing in the evening as I get home for 1 hour. On a free day with no classes, I would practice an hour in the morning, and another 2 hours in the afternoon. Though, practicing is lower priority compared to house chores that I have to do hence, if anything comes up during my practice time, I would finish that first only then i continue with my practice. Otherwise, I would spend the remaining doing some reading and then exercising in the evening. I didn't set a specific timetable, though, I set a specific target or time goal that i should achieve for practicing, exercising, house chores and reading.

6. Your plan for next week (Week 4)
Next week, I plan to finish my I'm yours from Jason Mraz and learn a new pop song. I also plan to record a video for the report of me playing Rasa Sayang and Perfect from Ed Sheeran.

Golfing Week 4

1. Your name, matric number, date
Hazim Bin Fadzli, A184033
13th august 2023

2. Your progress so far
For week 3, the initial plan was to learn to swing with driver which has a longer shaft and lower loft.
Generally, longer and lower loft clubs are harder to strike as it is more difficult to control the
clubface. Therefore, I decided to practice more with mid irons to recurring mistakes in my swing
mechanics such as incorrect weight shift and pivoting that result in hooking and slicing. On the
contrary, I have also learnt new techniques in golfing—pitching, chipping and putting.

3. Your feelings and thoughts
I had a lot of fun this week as I get to learn new techniques compared to previous week. Pitching
lesson was the hardest lesson so far. There was a lot of frustration throughout the lesson. I struggled
a lot when the lesson was conducted on the slope of the course. For the past few weeks, most of the
lessons were taught at the driving range. I came into realisation that golfing is much harder when you
are on the grass. The feeling of striking the ball is different when you swing at the driving range.

4. How did you learn and apply the skill of decision making in your EP journey?
Decision making skill while playing golf is a crucial skill that can have a big impact on how well you do
on the course. To navigate the course strategically, golfers must evaluate many elements, weigh
possibilities, and make wise decisions. Golf is not just about how far you can hit the ball. There are
many factors to be considered such as length of holes, hazards (water, bunkers, rough), wind
direction, and elevation changes. Club selection also involves strategic thinking. Choosing the right
club is important to hit the green after analysing the distance to the target, the lie of the ball and any
obstacles in your path.

5. How did you manage your time throughout this EP journey?
time management has never been an issue for me. I made arrangement for the class with my coach
on weekend by constructing a timetable with goals to achieve for that particular week. Classes were
held every weekday morning. I had no trouble waking up early as I am used to it. However, the only
problem was morning traffic. Despite getting stuck in traffic every morning, I was still able to attend
the class early.

6.

1. Your name, matric number, date

Hamelda Tanisha Ganaprakasam
A173343
24th July 2023

2. Your Progress so far

So far for this 3rd week, my progress has been great as a volunteer teacher. As mentioned in week 2, week 3 was mostly about invigilating classes as it was examination week. I was given an exam timetable to follow and to know the classes that I had to invigilate, mostly were Form 2 and Form 3 classes. I had to distribute and collect their papers once the exam was over. As a volunteer teacher compared to the first 2 weeks, I think I have learnt a lot more and also got an opportunity to improve myself.

3. Your Feeling and Thoughts :

I always had a mixed feeling about choosing this volunteer service as my EP. Without any previous experience or knowledge, controlling a class of 30 students was totally something new for me. However, got to admit that it was fun teaching and being around students. It also feels different to be in a superior position than them and to be addressed as teacher. As much I am young and new to this field, I always made sure to not take advantage of the situation and show my superiority towards the students by being harsh and rude to them instead I always saw things from the student's perspective and was friendly with them.

4. How did you learn and apply the skill of decision making in your EP journey?

Decision making has always been a skill that I always lack of. Despite knowing that it is an important skill in working life especially in medical field. Thanks to this EP, I have managed to learn few ways and making good and practical decisions. My mentor has been a great support for me in helping me to decide the best task to be given to the students and the lessons to be conducted. She also told me to check with other teachers on how they conduct lessons for their students. During my free period, she will bring me along to her class and make me to observe on how she manages her students as well as her classes.

Learning this skill from them, I have learnt to imply it myself over the week by being independent and providing lessons from their workbook.

5. How did you manage your time throughout this EP journey ?

I thought managing time as a new temporary teacher would be hard but I managed it. I always made sure to prepare my lessons a day before and get approved from my mentor before giving it to my students. I will also enter my class on time and provide time for them to do their work. 15 mins before the class ends, I will discuss the answers with them. In this way, I have managed to cover the lessons as planned before the class ends. At the end of the day, I decided to play Hangman and Bingo with the students just to kill the time and to release the exam tense from the students.

6. Your plan for next week (Week 4)

Next week, I plan to go light and easy with the students by providing easy exercises from their workbook. I also plan to help the teachers mark their exam paper and discuss the exam paper with the students.

Your progress so far

My progress has been going pretty good. Actually, I received more orders for this week compared to last week. But this time I had to limit the number of orders that I can take for a day because I noticed that I could not handle more than 3 orders a day. That is my limit and I had to acknowledge that and try not to push myself or else I would feel so stressed and pressured. So, to maintain the quality of my product and to take care of my mental health, I’d decided to limit the number of orders to 3 for a day.

3. Honestly, I’ve never ever see baking as a burden in my life because I love baking so much. But, recently I felt so stressed to the point I had a thought to stop baking because it was so tiring and I didn’t find joy in baking anymore. But after I took some time to rest and relax, I realized that I was just tired when I had that thought.

4. But, for the sake of my mental health, I’ve decided to limit my orders. I learnt that life is a matter of choices. Every choice you make makes you.
