While Cagayan is one of the top producers it still suffers setback. One of the goals set in the Sustainable Development Goals(SDG), Zero hunger addresses the need for an efficient production because without such the growing problem of food shortage can be catastrophic for the masses. Cagayan Valley due to natural and man made problems suffers in its production of crops. Things such as dry spells and flooding can destroys crops. Additionally deforestation is also a problem here due to what was previously mentioned floods are becoming an increasing problem more so with the deforestation making them more susceptible to it.

References:
https://www.pna.gov.ph/articles/1066232
https://reliefweb.int/report/philippines/flooding-cagayan-towns-destroys-p286-m-agri-da
https://b1g1.com/sustainable-development-goals?gclid=Cj0KCQiA99ybBhD9ARIsALvZavU13zeIm5R5r3Z7a5ib-MTFinXiagAQJzJRAtvnyETInqbd1P8ZS14aAgcbEALw_wcB

Cristina Antonio, mayor of Alcala town in Cagayan, said severe flooding in the province was brought about by a “confluence of factors,” including deforestation. She cited a study by Fernando Siringan, one of the country’s top river and marine geologists and former director of the UP Marine Science Institute, about flood and riverbank erosion on the Cagayan and Pared rivers in Alcala.

The study, which was conducted from July to September 2020, said native trees that normally retained soil and regulated water release were stripped from mountains, slopes, and watersheds in the entire Cagayan Valley. The trees are being cut and forests are being threatened, not only by illegal logging, but also by yellow corn farming and the use of herbicide that kills vegetation and weakens the soil.

Ref:
https://www.rappler.com/newsbreak/iq/issues-need-to-be-addressed-cagayan-flooding/
