Holden breaks into his parents house late at night to go see Phoebe and says that he hopes to get caught by his parents that he carefully avoided.

He shows that he wants to be caught because he is still just a kid that needs to feel loved by his family, and that he’s not some old loner. Holden throughout the story as put forth an appearance of a mature, ready for adulthood, teenage boy. By revealing his desire to be with his family, he proves that he is still just a kid with pride who's too scared to say anything about returning to them.

Holden can be characterized as afraid because he wants to come forward to his parents, but he has too much pride to return to a family he felt that he didn’t belong in. He's scared to come foward to them and admit he wants to be with them because he doesn't see it as the mature thing to do, and that being an adult means that he has to be on his own.

His Conversation with Mr. Antolini

His conversation with Mr. Antolini is about how if Holden continues on his current path, it will hurt him in the end, and Holden really listens to what he has to say.

Holden tends to put up this wall with people because his pride is too big and he doesn’t want people to see him as anything other than a mature adult. When talking to Mr. Antolini, he doesn’t dismiss him like he would with others when he tells him that he's making poor life decisions. This proves that Holden is capable of overcoming his pride and ego and readlly listen to what others have to say, even when they say things that prove he isn't as ready for adulthood as he thinks.

Holden is understanding because he doesn’t just push away Antolini’s opinions and comes to terms with them even though past him wouldn’t have.

Holden physically fights Stradlater after he wouldn’t tell him what he did with Jane.

Holden wants to be perceived as strong and tough, when in reality he is just immature because he let his emotions get the best of him. When he picks this fight with Stradlater his wall of maturity is torn down to reveal an immature boy because he picked a fight he knew he would end up losing.

Holden is immature because he wants to be perceived as mature which gets him into situations he wouldn't be in if he really handled them maturely.

Holden calls Faith, who is a prostitute that was recommended to him by someone he met at a party. When he calls her he speaks to her in a lower voice to seem older, but eventually he removes himself from all sexual advances.

Holden tends to put off a vibe of an overly mature teenager who thinks he knows best, when in reality he doesn't. Because he wants to be seen this way, he thinks he needs to do things to further influence that visual even though he isn't ready for them.

Holden is impulsive because he does things without really thinking it through, and when he does think about it, he’s already gone through with it, leaving him to realize that he's not ready.

Holden's train ride with Mrs. Morrow when he lies to her about her son, who is someone Holden doesn't like. Instead of telling her all the things he doesn't like about him and how he acts, Holden tells her that her son is a good person.

Holden tends to seem like the type of person to not really be compassionate, but when he lies to a stranger about her horrible son, he proves that he is a good person that cares about the wellbeing of others. It also has to do with the fact that he misses his family and wouldn't want people telling his parents that he is a bad person.

He is compassionate because he didn’t tell Mrs. Morrow about who her son truly was because he knew that it would make her feel better than the truth would. He also knew that he wouldn’t want people talking about him that way to his own parents.

Holden goes to Ernie's, a bar, when he runs into his brother’s ex-girlfriend, and then promptly leaves when she tries to invite him to hangout with her and her boyfriend at the bar.

Holden is like any other teen when it comes to wanting to fit in with an older crowd at a place for older people. When Holden runs into a familiar face, he comes to terms that he'd rather not have boring adult conversations, so instead he leaves.

Holden is picky because he picks and chooses what adult situations he wants to be a part of. When it came time for the conversation and hangout with acquaintances, he chose not to, making him picky because in the moment he was bored because he believed he had better things to do then to waste his time with them.
