The Witch trials were very weird and odd when they occurred and it made many people unsettled. Many girls were very bored in this time period so they faked having symptoms that seemed like they were being hurt by the accused women. Some women who were accused were put to death by being hung but many other hundreds of women were wrongly convicted. The accused women for accused by girls that claim are being hurt by the suspects evil spirit. It was a very cruel thing to accuse innocent people of witchcraft when they were really innocent.

Witch Hysteria

The witch hysteria that arose in Salem stemmed from the Calvinist conviction that Satan, sometimes in the form of illness, natural disasters or tragedy, worked on the earth. Times of trouble showed Satan was at work. The Puritans also believed that Satan, through the witchcraft, recruited witches and warlocks to aid him. When people began to suspect each other of engaging in witchcraft, which was usually against foreigners or rivals, witch hysteria soon grew around.

The City Upon A Hill Theory proposed that the colony of Massachusetts Bay would be a utopia where God could be found in scripture and good work ethics. Jon Winthrop, the individual behind the "City Upon A Hill" idea, had developed it to set an example for other Christians worldwide. Puritans founded colleges which were: Harvard, Princeton, and others. These colleges taught young men the words of God and ministers, they taught that "grace" was a free gift of salvation and that there is a great deal of depravity, the belief that at birth everyone is a sinner. These ideas have probably played a role in the Crucible by determining who is and who is not taking part in unholy practices.

Puritans refers to the religious reform movement that first originated in the Church of England. Throughout Britain, the Puritans were trying to get rid of the Catholic Church but the King soon put them under persecution. They left Britain as a result, and moved to the "New World," or North America. The colony of Massachusetts Bay was founded here and they practiced their beliefs free. The same beliefs somehow started a hysteria of witches which terrorized the people in the colony.

Calvinism is John Calvin's Christian religious philosophy, his emphasis and grace of God and the predestination doctrine. Puritans, shared common Calvinist values including total depravity, predestination, minimal expiation, and grace. In the end, the Puritans were a theocracy, a God-governed culture. The Calvinist convictions in the nature of witches led to the witch scare most certainly. They feared such practices, as they were coupled with Satan.
