After taking the mentoring teacher readiness self-assessment , I found my self strongly agree with a lot of the questions on how I might be passionate about the teaching profession , and how I would be able to be empathetic, caring , good listener , and understandable the emotional needs of new teachers ,as I was a new teacher before. However, I was asking my self : "do I really know that how to provide constructive feedback to adults ?" and how that could be more difficult than doing this with my students . also I realized that I had to have a good time management skills in order to be available as needed to help my initial educator. In addition, the fact that I have to be aware that I have to use academic state standards through my coaching journey with new teachers and how that could be overwhelming for both of us. To sum up, after taking the self assessment , I realized that it i is not that simple even if I view my self as a good , strong teacher . In fact it requires a lot of knowledge and effort in order to succeed in this mission. It is a huge responsibility that requires a lot of reflection and honesty with my self first before cultivating that on another person

The mentoring readiness self-assessment revealed that I am willing to help and guide new teachers to become a successful professional. I set aside time to meet with them to discuss curriculum, effective teaching practices and to provide constructive criticism about classroom management. It also revealed that I am always available to listen about accomplishments, as well as, concerns and be confidential about it. On the contrary, it also revealed that I have areas to work on, such as, knowing a variety of resources for instructional use and offering strategies for differentiation, just to name a few. I believe that mentoring, if done effectively, can be a beneficial learning experience for the mentor and the mentee.

On the "Mentor Readiness Self-Assessment," I found that many of the statements I disagreed with were relevant to attitude. In Aguilar's book, she wrote, "Resilience is in great part about attitude and behaviors [...]" (p. 2). This is the focus of her book, so I'm hopeful that, after reading and reflecting on her book throughout this course, I will be a more resilient educator (and person). The statements I agreed with or strongly agreed with were mainly relevant to helping initial educators be successful. I was not surprised that the self-assessment revealed that I am ready to devote time and energy to listening to, observing, and providing constructive feedback to initial educators.

The self-assessment demonstrated to me that I am ready to mentor and coach others. I have experience doing this, so I was not all that surprised by the result of my survey. I strongly agreed with all but 2 of the sentences. The two I did not "strongly agree", I marked "agree" and I did so because they were related to modeling best practices and differentiation strategies. Although I feel confident in these areas, I feel that these are areas for growth, especially when you take into account all of the different content areas. What I found most useful about this assessment was having it on hand as a checklist for myself before I engage in coaching, kind of like what a pilot does before takeoff. By reviewing this checklist and doing a quick self-assessment before coaching conversations, I increase my self-awareness and put myself in the proper mindset to be an effective coach.

Taking the mentor readiness self assessment again reassured me that I do have the abilities to be an effective mentor. There were a number of questions, in which, I changed from an agree the first time I took this assessment to a strongly agree the second time taking the assessment. Most of the questions pertained to being present, motivated and enthusiastic about guiding an initial teacher through their journey. Not that I didn't want to do that before, but now I am even more excited about helping others be as excited about teaching as I am. Finding those bright spots, learning together, knowing who I am and thriving in whatever I do!

I don't have a record of my answers and sums from taking the "Mentor Readiness Self-Assessment" at the beginning of this course. However, my reflection revealed that many of the statements I disagreed with were relevant to attitude. After taking this self-assessment again, I found that I only disagreed with two statements. Those statements were relevant to attitude. I am not surprised to see a decrease in attitude statements I disagree with from the beginning of the course to now. I have been trying to be more conscious of my attitude and looking for the bright spots. In order to lead transformational efforts in my school, I have to attend to my own transformation first. I am seeing this transformation starting to happen with my shift in attitude. I have the power to choose my attitude in any given situation. After taking this course, I realize how important my attitude is to thriving. I believe that if I am thriving, I can help others thrive, too. I look forward to doing that through mentoring opportunities when they arise.

I took the self-assessment again and in regards to the results themselves, it wasn't very different. That's not to say I didn't learn an incredible amount in this course, I most certainly did. It's more that I felt prepared to mentor when I began this course because I had already been doing it quite a bit, so the being ready part was not a new thing for me. What I was looking for was more tools and an unexpected benefit was that I learned a great deal more about myself. Learning about resiliency and becoming more aware of my emotions and my responses to them has undoubtedly prepared me to become a better coach/mentor for the stakeholders I serve.

I have to admit I am rather shocked that my "Strongly Agree" statements went from 10 in the first assessment to 19 in this assessment, and I thought I was being overly-positive the first time. Most importantly, I feel I have come to understand the mentor's role much more clearly, which was really my primary reason for taking this course. I am also more positive about being able to schedule time and being more available in response to how challenging and time-consuming this role actually is. I don't think I have made any real gains in becoming a better listener, though I keep working at it at home and in school. Another interesting change was I seem to have become more confident in guiding, supporting and modeling best practices. So this course helped me develop confidence in this very important area as well. A strong theme throughout the course has been to be more attuned to emotional intelligence, and I see I actually agreed more strongly in this area than before. I still find the technology more challenging than I would like, and continue to wonder why I still come up as "Anonymous"!
