Corduroy is a bear in a shop who is missing a button on his overalls. Corduroy has always wanted a home but most shoppers pass over him due to his missing button causing him to go on an adventure to try and find it wanting to be perfect. However a little girl buys him expressing how she likes him how he is regardless of not having a button. Corduroy is a book expressing how we don't have to be perfect to be accepted, and we should love who we are.

You, me and empathy is all about understanding our emotions and feelings in life such as when we feel sad, hurt or happy. The book also covers how we should help others when they feel certain emotions, as shown by the little boy in the book helping people in his life when they are sick or sad or lonely by remembering what people had said to him when he felt that way. The book also touches on bullying as we see the little boy encounters a bully and acceptance through the words "people are people"

Just ask! is a book all about celebrating diversity and what makes us different. This book focuses on disabilities both learning and physical. The book features a range of disabilities and explains what they are and how it works For example, Sonia explains how her diabetes means she has to have shots of insulin. The book talks about how it is okay to talk about what makes us different whether that be a physical disability such as being blind or in a wheelchair or a learning disability such as autism or ADHD. The book shows how if everyone was exactly the same the world would be boring and that it is okay to celebrate what makes us different.

Mr Stink is a book with a strong moral about not judging people for how they look. Mr Stink (who is actually Lord Darlington) is a homeless man wo lives on a bench. Chloe one of the main characters, invites Mr Stink to live with her family in their garden shed. Chloe's mother does not like homeless people and has very rude opinions regarding them. This book highlights not to assume things about someone based on their looks through the past of Mr Stink who became homeless when his home burnt down due to a fire where his wife died. The book also talks about acceptance no matter how different a person is to you and that we should be caring and considerate to other people we meet.

Percy Jackson and the lightning thief is the first book in the Percy Jackson series. The book is centred around the main characters Percy Jackson and Annabeth Chase. Percy Jackson is a young boy who discovers he is a demigod and his father is Poseidon, the Greek god of the sea. Percy also has dyslexia and ADHD, a trait that we learn is common in the demigods. This book is all about showing kids they can be anything they want despite the challenges they have and that we are all capable of great things.

This book is about Zoe a young girl who loves to bake. She has never met her father due to him being in prison. On Zoe's birthday she gets a letter from him and she writes back, as their conversations develop she begins to doubt if her dad actually committed the crime he is imprison for. This book is a great at gently covering important topics such as racism and prejudice as well as non-typical families such as Zoe's family which has her mum, grandmother and step-dad whilst her father in is prison.

The main character in the book being a teddy would also engage young readers possibly allowing good conversation starters about teddies we have that may have imperfections that we love regardless.

I feel some of the words and topics may be slightly too confusing for reception pupils however with pupils in years 1 and 2, it would be good to explore, it can also introduce to them the concept of bullying and how to treat others with kindness regardless of differences.

It tackles the subject very well and also allows children to ask questions openly they may not have asked otherwise. This book could also be used for younger years or older years however if you possibly had a pupil in the class who had a disability and awareness needed to be shown to the pupils.

This is because the topic of judgement as well as other sensitive topics such as homelessness would be good to explore in these years as well as acceptance. the language in the books may be too complicated for KS1.

By reading the first one in the series some children may want to continue the series in their own time.
