THE CONCEPT of True Fair

AWF volunteers work with communities living within threatened habitats which in turn harbour endangered species. Often these communities are desperately poor and usually so through exploitation by others of their resources. In the AWF’s view, an essential pre-requisite to affecting meaningful conservation change is supporting local communities in generating wealth that enables them to respond positively to environmental challenges.

The AWF supports (mainly) women through its micro-finance initiatives which pay for capital equipment and materials so facilitating the production of locally made products. Additionally ‘truly fair’ prices are paid for these goods which are then imported into the UK where they can be sold at a premium. Profits generated are repatriated to the communities from which they came to be used in community and conservation initiatives as well as in stimulating yet more entrepreneurial activity.

Another aspect of True Fair is that the seller gets to keep 50% of the income generated. This can, of course, be reinvested by the seller in volunteering or worthy causes or it can simply be used to ‘make a living’, helping an individual become sustainable in an ethical way.

TES
As an official TES Content Partner, AWF resources are downloaded by tens of thousands of teachers each year and used in their lessons. Constantly updating and improving these resources is a core activity of the AWF. Our focus is conservation and environmental resources although increasingly we are developing global citizenship and (social) entrepreneurial resources as well.

SOCIAL ENTERPRISE AWARDS
The AWF exists to raise awareness and inspire action. It seeks to identify tomorrow’s (social) entrepreneurs, the individuals who will lead change in our society, and facilitate and support their efforts. We have developed the ‘Agent of Change’ Entrepreneurship Awards to encourage and support the development of entrepreneurial spirit in young people.

TRUE FAIR
Raise funds for your school and encourage the spirit of social entrepreneurship in your students. Join other schools in taking Fair Trade stock on a sale or return basis (the AWF carries all stock risk) with the aim of keeping back 50% of sale proceeds for school projects. The other 50% together with unsold stock is returned to the AWF for re-investment in its micro-finance programmes.

EPIC 8
Students are invited to carry on the conservation story line for the EPIC 8 animal adventurers. They are also welcome to produce alternative illustrations and even animation work. Any work that we adopt will be printed and royalties will go to the students involved.

GAP LIFE
The AWF’s quarterly magazine written by and for gaplifers.

FUNDRAISING SUPPORT

The AWF has some great fundraising ideas. Check them out and help raise funds for you and for our causes.

EU PROGRAMMES

The AWF has operated a number of EU programmes over a number of years and works with educational partners across Europe.

VOLUNTEER CREDITS

The AWF believes that through volunteering, giving of oneself to the common good, we can build better people. For this reason students can ‘earn’ volunteer credits so as to secure free volunteering opportunities on AWF programmes in Tenerife, Ireland and Sri Lanka.

TALKS

The AWF delivers, free of charge, talks on volunteering to students. These talks are designed to raise awareness of conservation and humanitarian threats and inspire students to get out and ‘volunteer’. We have a busy schedule of talks across Europe from October to April each year.

EDUCATIONAL GROUPS

The AWF has extensive experience of running low cost educational groups and has interesting opportunities in Tenerife, Ireland and Romania as well as further afield in Africa and Asia.

CONSERVATION WORKSHOPS

The AWF has a number of workshops on conservation that it can deliver through local students to primary school children based on the EPIC 8 animal adventures. To book a free workshop and secure the visit of members of the EPIC 8 adventurers to your schools.

SPECIAL EDUCATION

Through its Autism Adventure programme, the AWF has a wealth of experience in facilitating enriching experiences for students with special needs.
