Red Flag #1 - Appeal to Authority

Definition: The Red Flag "Appeal to Authority" uses support of a person or idea as evidence in another idea or product. Companies use this in advertisements mainly to promote their products using the success/support of others. They use the support of a figure of "authority" to make people think that

Connection:
This picture shows the appeal to authority by using a doctor as a figure of authority to promote their cigarette brand. Although cigarettes have a negative affect on your health, this company uses a doctor as a way to make it seem like you should smoke this brand of cigarettes as it is promoted by doctors.

Reason For Belief #1 - Patternicity.

Definition: Patternicity is our brains tendancy to find patterns in objects or pictures. Our brain does this naturally, but we sometimes use it as evidence in believing in a topic as we think that there is something there but it is just our brain making us think something is there.

Connection:
This picture shows how we find a pattern in an image and use it as evidence for something that may not be actually true. People see this innocent picture of some rock formings on the surface of Mars, but to our brains, one of the rocks looks like a pyramid, which could lead some people to use this as evidence to believe in something that our brains tricked us into thinking.

Red Flag #2 - Mystical Energy

Definition: Mystical Energy is a measurement of something`s ability to perform work with spiritual objects that claim to have powers to improve your wellbeing. Example online stores charging ridiculous amount of money to purchase stones, necklaces and bracelets claiming to have mystical powers that can make you feel better, faster, stronger.

Connection:
In the video, “Crystals for Cancer” a lady takes about how the crystals send out a mystical energy field that makes you feel better. There isn’t a proven fact that any on these stone contain mystical energy. But this lady talks about a crystal fighting cancer, when most medicine can’t even beat cancer. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vl1fKRdYcq4

Reason For Belief #2 - Unexplained

Definition: The Unexplained Reason for Belief is simply anything that hasn’t been proven with exact evidence. The unexplained is basically anything that has not been established to exist. Example of the current Goblin that has been floating around the internet. There has been a possible sighting of a goblin that lures children into the forest.

Connection: In the video, “5 Goblins Caught On Camera & Spotted In Real Life!” a man starts to talk about the possible sightings of a said goblins. Goblins are known to try and lure kids into forest and harvest their nails for some reason. In most of the sightings, there is a kid playing and having fun when a small creature that walks like a human is spotted in the background. Also, most of the sighting of this creature are known to be in the Latin countries. These creatures have yet to be captures or properly sighted, making them fall under the reason of belief of the unexplained. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IuTCFp5QZIs

Reason for Belief #3: Simplicity

Definition:
The scientific answers are hard to understand, pseudoscience is easy. People always like to look farther than what is right in front of them. When someone sees a ghost from the corner of their eye, they would rather hear that there are spirits in the room rather than it was a shadow of a bird flying through a window. Example is someone thinking about a bad thing on to someone and it actually happening.

Connection:
Everyone knows that Oprah is a huge success, but everyone knew that she would get where she is today, except for a selected few. Her parents for one, but everyone thinks that her kids will be something big. These selected few had psychic readings that predicted that she will become a huge success and that is the simplicity of that. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=REC4ylZtj5I

Red Flag #3 - Suppression By Authorities

Definition:
Suppression by authorities: usually a frail excuse for why scientists don’t take their claim seriously – eg: scientific magazines won’t publish their article on why their medical product works due to a conspiracy of the mainstream establishment of medicine because it’s in the interests of the medical industry to keep you sick.

Connection:
In this video, "Has The Cure For Cancer Been Suppressed?" it relates to suppression by authorities because they talk about how there could be cures being hidden because of how much money is involved in the pharmaceutical industry. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zeVHyNj4694

Red Flag #4 - Confirmation Bias

Definition: “Confirmation Bias” is the tendency to believe only the information that supports previous ideas or ones ones views and beliefs. For example,
student writing a report will primarily search for information that supports their beliefs and disregard anything that doesn't line up with what they think.

Connection: This picture shows a prime example of confirmation bias.
