DIGESTIVE SYSTEM ORGANS

The first organ of the digestive system is the mouth. Chewing breaks down food into smaller pieces while saliva starts the process of breaking it down. From the mouth food travels down the esophagus into the stomach in a process called swallowing. The stomach is a hollow organ that stores food while acid or bile produced in the lining further break it down. The contents then travel into the small intestine which is a 22 foot long “tube” of smooth muscle that continues the breakdown process using enzymes from the pancreas and bile from the liver. It’s also responsible for transferring the nutrients into the bloodstream. The pancreas, liver, and gallbladder secrete digestive enzymes into the small intestine to break down proteins, fats, and carbohydrates. The liver is essential for the detoxification of the body. The contents travel into the large intestine where waste is processed and solidified. When waste is ready to be released it enters the rectum and exits the body through the anus.

DIGESTIVE SYSTEM RELATIONSHIP TO THE MUSCULAR SYSTEM:

The digestive system relies on the smooth and skeletal muscle of the muscular system to operate. In the mouth, skeletal muscles are used in the jaw to aid in chewing, and swallowing wouldn’t be possible without skeletal and smooth muscle in the esophagus. Smooth muscle contraction move food contents all throughout the hollow organs, from the stomach all the way to the rectum.
