I want to do activities such as the one we did today and have students read samples of previous years, have them grade the essay, annotate it, and finally reveal the grades. This would genuinely help the morale of the students especially those who feel that they are not the strongest of writers. This will also help them with the organization.

Students often feel overwhelmed by the writing prompts and rubrics. However, the color-coding activity allows students to see that the task is reasonable, and if they successfully follow a line of reasoning, they can earn a passing score.

I believe my students will have a misunderstanding about how to establish a line of reasoning. A lot of (admittedly remedial) students I have worked with have thought that ‘drop quotes’ were enough to prove their claim. They would incorporate very little of their own commentary because they did not fully understand how to express the relationship between evidence and claim.

I believe that writing and reading need to be taught and practiced in tandem. So, I would address the relationship between evidence and claim using annotating strategies, transition words, rhetorical choices/devices, and other writing strategies.

I really enjoyed the activity where we restructured the paragraph that was divided up. This would help students see how writing should follow a logical progression that makes sense and how the (proper) use of transition words really enhance their writing.
