<title>She was known as the &quot;playful one&quot;, which is what her name means. In her young life, around the ages of 11 or 12, she was rumored to have saved the life of Captain John Smith, leader of the Jamestown settlement. By doing so, she saved the settlement. That wasn&#39;t the only way she helped them, though. </title>

<title>Pocahontas aided the Jamestown settlement in multiple ways. She visited them often, bringing supplies and food for the harsh winters. Not only this, but when there was conflict between her people, the Powhatan Native Americans, and the Jamestown settlers, Pocahontas served as a peacemaker. </title>

<title>When affairs between the Powhatans and Jamestown settlers were rough, and a few English settlers were being held captive by the Native Americans, Pocahontas was captured in hopes of being used for negotiation. This proved successful for the most part, with all the English being released. There was other items, such as weapons, that needed to be returned after being taken, but were not by the refusal of Pocahontas&#39; father, chief of the Powhatan Native Americans. No conflict arose from this, though. The seven settlers were the main concern of the English.</title>

<title>While with the Jamestown settlers, Pocahontas learnt English and the teachings of Christianity. She didn&#39;t convert until a year later. It is suspected that one of her teachers was John Rolfe, who would later become her husband.</title>
