The Help is a book about civil rights set in the 1960s. It focuses on the women of the time, white and black. It is from the perspective of two black maids, who are friends and the white woman they work with to write a book, who is also friends with the women they work for. It talks about the daily lives of these women’s and the daily struggles they face on a daily basis that as well as the struggles black people faced at this time in history. Through the different experiences these women have as maids for the different women they work for, and how these women all viewed race differently. It explores how although it is a white dominated society all these white women were raised by their black maids, yet they are treated the way they are.

The most basic way this movies relates to history is that it is about civil rights. But, if you explore this deeper you see this from the perspective of women during this time and hear very little from the men in this movie.
The way the friend groups operate in this book reflects how close societies were during this time especially the colored women of this time. All of the maids in this book are friends for the most part. They go to the same church, ride the same bus to work, live in the same neighborhood, and the women they work for are friends as well. The maids seem to raise these women's children for them while they run around and have parties, yet the maids are still treated as second class citizens. The women they work for all treat them differently but for the most part they are all just viewed as the help.

The Help is one of my favorite books and the movie is almost just as good. The movie would be better if it more closely followed the book. (Lulabelle) The characters are very likable and the story is very compelling as their are more and more secrets that get spilled about different people and everyone finds their way though their issues throughout the book. It is a very moving story and very accurately captures the the history part of the time.
