Simply ask parents/guardians to tell you about their student "in a million words or less". Giving families the space and openness to share with you about their students is a great way to build connections early on. (I typically sent this assignment home with students the first week of school and attached an envelope if parents wanted to keep the letter private or allow them to email you instead. I often reread the letters right before parent-teacher conferences.) If you are in the front of the line facing forward, it's harder to keep an eye on your students. I recommend designating a strong line leader and developing clear stopping points along your route. When you get to these points, the line leader can turn around and wait for you to give a signal to proceed forward. This allows you to walk alongside your students and address any behavior needs. Eventually, I would recommend training student line leaders to pause and evaluate the line. (My class used "5 fingers" as our signal for a "5 star" line that meant we could keep going.
