WWhen we first started this unit, and the words Loose parts and Playwork came up, learning more about it made me really look at how we do it at work and how we can change the way we are doing it. The question is ‘How does play work provide an inclusive environment?’

One thing that stood out is children have control and for the adult to take a step back, by letting the children have the freedom to create their own thing and really get lost in their play.

The first task was to set up the area and create an environment that is inviting for children to feel connected to the area. I found it a bit difficult to work out what is going to look like a mess or too much of my input to control the play space. Giving the children the right Playwork gives them the opportunity to be who they want to be, do what they want, and the time to imagine the possibilities.

Even Playwork goes back to the indigenous people cause part of the play was a part of learning to survive, like making a hurt out of a box, that gives shelter in life. Sometimes the chance of imagination can grow into a life skill.

Being a Ninja, what does that mean in a pop-up playground in loose parts? It means taking a step back and observing what they are doing and letting them be in control of the play and not being in their space.
My observation looking back at the whole day and what I can see at our pop-up playground you could see that we were worried about Missis and what the children were doing we were standing close observing and staring the whole time, as we are strangers to these children it can give them the sense of feeling uncomfortable and not giving them the full chance to full engage in the space. I observed a child creating something with a box and toilet roll the way he was holding it to his eye it looked like a camera or a telescope, look at how the parent was interacting with the child was controlling the play and not giving the child the opportunity create how he wanted. Indigenous people also gave the freedom to their children to engage in areas to play and explore their areas to crate and climb trees with controlled risks to learn and grow.

On our loose parts pop-up play space, we needed to create a space that was an environment for a child to explore, but also safe. around the play areas and the play space, they are in.
When we looked at our area before setting up as it was my first time setting up a loose part when needing to create a place of exploration and play, giving the children the sense its ok to make a mess, but not just throwing the loose parts all over the place that it looks like rubbish is everywhere.
once we set up as the day would go on, we would change the loose parts and move them around.
As an educator, it is hard not to control the play by sharing ideas and when I was standing there, I did feel lost and like I was doing nothing, even though I was observing children and the area, giving up that control was a new thing to me, protecting the children's play is something we need to look at.
When I was packing up the space, I made sure I left it by picking up the loose parts and the little bits of rubbish and leaving it the way we found it as the space we were on belongs to the Indigenous people and respect the land and taking care of it is very important.

After doing the placement, I was excited to bring it into my room at work and see how the children would create and explore. I remember one of the videos we watch in our classes, her name was Aretha Ball she said, " we need to be agents of change not objects of change." I believe she is right sometimes we just do what we are told and follow the routine and every day becomes the same, I think the only way we can change is by having good communication and working together.
I'm thankful for my center we have low numbers of staff, and we always talk about each other's ideas and help each other to achieve change from the routine if it's not working, to the outdoor area changing to see the that would work, even changing the inside of the centre.
When I came to work after the pop-up space I spoke to the girls and said how can we create a space for children to explore loose parts?
We used our outdoor areas and place the loose parts on them and let the children create and see how they interacted with each, the staff and I agreed that it would be a good idea to ask parents and children to grow our loose parts and have a space every week for children to be able to control a space that they can create their ideas.

"The child has a right to learn What, when how and who they learn with, it's about putting learning in the children's hands and providing the support the learning that they need to lead their own independent learning journey"? - (Rachel Roberts)
This speaks so much to me and really looks at how loose parts work and how Montessori work, I work in a Montessori Centre where we have a mix ages group room of 3–6-year-olds. In Montessori there are 6 Principles when having a prepared environment, just to go over; the first one is freedom this is where we create an environment where we give the children the freedom to choose their own activity, and this will help with independence and creativity. When you look at principle 2 its more about control and structured this the opposite of what we want to create in our place space, finding the happy medium in creating that space for children to have the independence and creativity to explore the area and make a mess in an environment that can be controlled and structured.
Seeing the children create trains for babies and not just exploring the loose parts area but exploring the whole outdoor area to bring them together, really showed me that children when given the freedom and time to explore can, create amazing things.
