In Europe, many harsh punishments were carried out. One main popularized death sentence was burning at the stake. This only really occurred in Europe. Witches in Europe were charged with heresy which was punishable by burning. Another gruesome punishment was being stoned to death. This did not occur as often in Europe, however it happened on more than one occasion. In the colonies, witches were usually jailed and then hung to death. A punishment less severe than those in Europe.

Mass Hysteria

The massive paranoia during the Salem Witch Trials of 1692 led to the trials of two dogs resulting in the death penalty for both of them. More than two-hundred cases of suspected witchcraft were also a result of the hysteria during this time. Witch markings were also believed in according to the Malleus Maleficarum. An extra nipple known as the " Witch's tit" was believed to be on a witch so she could feed her familiars. The slightest marking would be tested by poking it with a needle to see if it bled. If the marking bled then, the woman would be free.

The Puritans were a group that wanted to purify, as their name suggests. This could have led to the mass fear they had experienced. Even farther back in history, the English had fears about witchcraft. And as the Puritans came from Europe, the seed of doubt was already placed within their heads. Witchcraft was openly proclaimed to be heresy and was punishable by the most severe death penalties.

Tituba, a slave from Barbados, had been the first accused the colonies for witchcraft. After the girls she was taking care of had begun to act strange, they were put onto trial. Those girls had then outed Tituba as the witch. Tituba then proclaimed that she had seen other names in the Devil's Book. This caused even more mass paranoia. The girls that Tituba had taken care of for the minister, had began to accuse others of witchcraft and they were believed because of their past connection with a witch. When someone they had accuse entered the room they began to act out to make their accusation more believable.

Governor William Phips was the man who put an end to the Salem Witch Trials of 1692. He was the one who outlawed "spectral evidence" in the trials. Spectral evidence being testimony from spirits and experiences with spirits. Governor Phips had freed of all of the accused that were still living. The ones that had confessed to witchcraft were jailed and lived through the trials and the people who denied it were hanged as punishment.
