Melodrama is the sophomore album to the acclaimed princess of alternative, Lorde. The young New Zealand born singer-songwriter topped charts in 2013 with songs such as "Royals" and "Team" from her debut album "Pure Heroine". Royals peaked at number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and had massive airplay. Lorde went on to win the Grammy's for Best Pop Solo Performance and Song of the Year for "Royals" at the 2014 Grammy Awards. Lorde had her very anticipated fans waiting for nearly 4 years for Melodrama, and I can say having listened to the album, it was worth the wait.

Lorde told the New York Times that the album wasn't necessarily a breakup album, but instead an album with grievances such as solitude and heartbreak. She wrote most of the songs at a piano in her home in New Zealand. It was recorded over an 18 month period in New York City, from July 2015 to January 2017, and finally released on June 16th, 2017, nearly 4 years after the release of her debut album.

My personal favorite off of Melodrama, Sober is an upbeat, more pop-sounding track. The chorused vocals add an interesting element that we haven't yet heard in her music. Stylistically, it's way different from most of the songs on Pure Heroine.

Green Light is the first song on Melodrama, and introduces the overall style of Melodrama. More upbeat and dance-pop, Lorde introduces us to a big party. Lyrically, the song was inspired by Lorde's first heartbreak. The metaphor of the title comes in through the line "I'm waitin' for it, that green light, I want it", with people who listen interpreting "green light" as a signal giving Lorde permission to move on into the future.

A continuation of Sober, stylistically, this song is one of my favorite songs ever performed by Lorde. Cued with melancholy string passages, Lorde's voice is introduced with minor intervals in soft piano. My favorite part, is when the soft strings are joined with a percussive hip-hop beat, further introducing us to a new and improved Lorde.

In terms of style, Pure Heroine and Melodrama vary. Pure Heroine is overall very percussive, and relies a lot on synthesizer and mixed pre-recorded vocals. One of the reasons I loved Pure Heroine so much was because of how percussive it was, and it showed when she was performing, as she was only ever seen performing with her synth player and drummer. Melodrama is a lot more synthesized in terms of musical effects. Effects like synth strings, synth brass, and pre-recorded chorus vocals are present throughout the album's entirety.
