Post #1 (October 6, 2016) - Globalization Under Attack

This article reminds me of the Washington Consensus article by Williamson. owever, I believe this article counteracts with 1 out of the 10 economic policies because the Washington Consensus suggests for interest rates to be increased rather than be decreased. Due to the fact that higher interest rates will discourage capital flight and increase savings for the economy.

Yet despite this, the article talks about how Geneva, Switzerland is experiencing their slowest trade growth in recent years. To alleviate this problem the trade policy, Trans-Atlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) aims to remove trade barriers between the US and EU. This article reminded me of the policy instrument, "trade liberalization" because the TTIP is wanting to improve the trade growth by no restrictions on import or exports from other countries, reducing tax on imports and exports, and ultimately free trade.

This is decreasing the value of the Euro by 18%. With this decrease that means prices will raise for the importer, retailer, and consumer; therefore, customers are more willing to manoeuvre themselves towards other retailers. This article relates to the class because Unilever was part of our discussion about the MNC's. Along with discussing why these firms go transnational, is to increase their profit but in this case the Euro has decreased and so will their profit.

It reported that "767m people live in extreme poverty, subsisting on less than $1.90 a day". World bank has a goal to have all countries that have a high amount of poverty to develop but in the end they still feel that some countries will still be in poverty. In class we discussed three ways in which we measure development. This reminded me of measuring development by the percentage of people living in poverty.

The government seems to think that spending on infrastructure will boost the economic growth. BBC poses the question, if this is the right way to boost the economy or is it a waste of money? This article reminds me of the sociologist perspective because one of the professors that answered this question said the money spent on these project will give and immediate short-term cash boost for the economy but in the long-term the effects of this can be hard to measure up.

Mexico use to be the number one country for migration but now China, India, Romania, and Bangladesh are following right behind. This article relates to our class discussion on why people migrate? The Wiki reading on human migration discussed push and pull factors that cause people to migrate. Example of a push factor is not enough jobs and an example for a pull factor is more job opportunities. The push factors are unfavorable reasons and pull factors are favorable reasons for migration.

However, turns out that profit wasn’t going to be distributed equally because through the years LDCs got outsourced. This relates to the China Blue video by the workers in China being exploited by working long hours at almost no pay, while big corporations’ sale the merchandise made for premium price. Big corporations could have promised this global trade was going to be a profit towards them but turns out it wasn’t.

Remittances not only benefit the recipient but it also benefits the recipient's country economy because they are spending the remittance there. World Bank shows remittances are coming mostly from the US, which is not surprising. This article relates to the Wiki reading on remittances because here it further says migrants living in the US, send approximately 10% of their household income to their families back home. Remittances compete with international aid when it just isn't enough. Remittances contribute to the economic growth and to the livelihoods of poor people.

Compared to the sums paid by other banks during the financial crisis, Goldman is getting a far smaller settlement; "...Goldman to pay $2.385 billion in civil penalties, $875 million cash, provide up to $1.8 billion relief to consumers". This article reminds me of the film "Inside Job" because the film talked about the worst financial crisis amongst the banks selling faulty mortgages; this bank included. The banks were saying it was merely their "opinions" basically they did not want to admit they were lying to consumers.

The Myanmar Army is shooting innocent people, burning their homes, and raping women. The people of Mayanmar are under military lockdown; therefore, they are trapped and have yet been able to receive any aid. This article reminds me of the Wiki reading on INGOs because this nonprofit organization is meant to help those countries in need when their own state is either unable or unwilling to do so. Unfortunately not even the INGO could aid them in this tragic circumstance.
