The 1960s was a decade comprised of cultural
and political trends. Social movements occurred as a result of racial and
social prejudice from previous decades. Significant social movements include
Civil Rights, Women's Rights and Latino boycotts. Famous political figures such
as Martin Luther King Junior and Betty Friedan were ready for change and fought
for the freedom and equality of African Americans and women no matter the
consequences. The sixties was a determination for social justice of racism and
sexism. As a response to previous decades of oppression, segregation,
and racial discrimination, African Americans, Latinos and women spoke out to
obtain a highly successful period of change, equality and peace, called the
1960s.
