During the Victorian Era, women were generally kept out of most public political and social spheres. They were instead expected to maintain domestic chores and take care of the family.

Suffragettes and Suffragists

The suffragettes would achieve their rights using aggressive tactics - violent demonstrations. They believed that if the organization was heard, and formed enough awareness of their rights then women would be given the right to participate fully in politics.

The suffragists would achieve their rights using peaceful tactics - non-violent demonstrations. They believed that if the organization was seen to be intelligent, polite and law-abiding then women would prove themselves responsible enough to participate fully in politics.

In the Victorian era women were seen, by the middle classes at least, as belonging to the domestic sphere and this stereotype required them to provide their husbands with a clean home, food on the table and to raise their children.

Women did not have suffrage rights, the right to sue, or the right to own property.

Gender roles

Men inhabited the public sphere - the world of economy, politics and law. Women inhabited the private sphere - of domestic life, housekeeping, childcare and religious education. Once a woman married, she had no independent legal status. Marriage gave the husband ‘ownership’ over his wife’s body, money, personal belongings, children, property. Divorce was a social taboo.

National politics

- In the nineteenth century women had no place in national politics.

- They couldn’t stand as candidates for Parliament.

- Not even allowed to vote.

- It was assumed that women didn’t need the vote because their husbands could take responsibility in the political matters.

Etiquette

Women were expected to be behaved and well mannered. They must dress modestly and appear feminine. A sense of sexual narrowmindedness marked the Victorian Era: yet, it was during these years the prosititutional practices of the nation flourished.
