What motivates you more, your goals or someone else's goals for you?

Every year, I set the goal to be in the first fifteen to reach the summit of Horseshoe Mountain. I started off my highschool career by coming in tenth. My next year I placed in third. Last year was a disappointment because I only got 17th. I decided that this year was going to be my year. I hiked horseshoe 3 times this summer preparing for it. In my mind there was no way I wasn't going to get first place. I started off great this year, I ran and ran. At one point I was even in fourth place. Out of nowhere something hit me. I couldn't breath at all and felt like passing out. I could barely get a grasp of air. I was terrified that I was going to pass out and that I could potentially get hurt. I decided that the best thing I could do was sit down and wait for my body to settle down. Because I sat down to rest, many people passed me. I didn’t achieve my goal of getting in the top ten, but it helped me realize that even though I didn’t accomplish what I wanted I could still be happy. I enjoyed myself more than I had in recent years because, with the breaks, I was able to notice the the beauty of the mountain and the valley.

Has there been a time you just knew you were about to quit but you didn't? When? Why didn't you quit?

During the hike, after I got sick, I was almost sure I would have to stop, turn around, and go back to base camp. I felt so bad about it, because this was my last year I would be able to hike this mountain with the school. I called and asked my mom what would the best course of action be; she said I should do what I felt would be best for me. I decided that even though I wasn't feeling well, I needed to push myself to see how far I could go. I was very pleased to have I pushed myself to reach the top, for I felt there was no way I wouldn't be able to make it to the summit every year of my highschool career. It was all worth it in the end even though my body aches because of the hard work.

To my surprise, many people helped me reach the top of the mountain. It all started with Joseph Allen. We were hiking together when it all hit me. Joseph kept telling me “Ethan, you can do this,” and that helped motivate me to keep going. It was a very selfless act for him to sacrifice his placing time to help me reach the second checkpoint. At that point I told him to go ahead of me and enjoy not having to motivate me. Soon after Cameron came along and kept me going. He stuck with me the rest of the way. Together we kept each other going and reached our ultimate goal. It is amazing how many people are willing to help others in need of aid.
