The main source of the River Nile is the White Nile which begins in a country called Burundi, then the water flows through Lake Victoria. In Sudan, the White Nile spreads through a swamp which is called Sudd, then it is joined by the Blue Nile which flows from Ethopia, after that it is called The River Nile. In Egypt, the meanders of the River Nile across it floodplain to Cairo, there it form a very large delta from then it flows to the Mediterrnean Sea. In the past, the rains and melting snow caused Ethopias banks to flood, these floods left water and mud which made it easy for farmers to grow food and crops, in the delta and on the floodplain.

By building many dams, the egyptians were able to control the the flow of the water of The River Nile, the biggest dam is the Aswan High Dam. The holds floodwater back in a huge reservoir called Lake Nasser, so the people that live near the River Nile don't have to deal with the flooding to their homes and land. Water rushing through the dam wall is also used to generate electricty. The Aswan Dam holds flodwater and it also produces hydroelectricity.

Almost all of the water in Lake Nasser evaporates from the hot sun. Lots of fertile mud could have spread around the fields when the river flooded but now it is sitting at the bottom of the lake. Without the fertile mud brought to the other fields by the flood, now farmers in the River Nile Vallley use chemical fertilisers on their crops. The delta also is becoming salty because less freshater flows from the Nile, and more salty water from the Mediterranean Sea flows into the delta.

Most of towns and cities in Egypt and Sudan aren near River Nile. For the people that live in these towns or cities, the river is still for transporting people and goods especially in flood season when road transport is too difficult. Boats and and small ships can can travel through the River Nile, through Sudan and Egypt, except if the water level is low.
