Dr. Meredith Belbin noticed that people in teams tend to take on different team roles.
A team role is a tendency to behave, contribute and interrelate with others in a particular way.
There are 9 team roles classified into 3 groups that influence team success.

Action-oriented roles(Tendency to take action to solve a problem)

Shaper: Challenges the team to improve

Implementer: Execute ideas

Completer/Finisher: Ensure things are done on time

People-oriented roles(Focussed on interacting with people)

Coordinator: Chairperson

Team worker: Encourages cooperation

Resource Investigator: Explore outside opportunities

Thought-oriented roles

Plant: Presents new ideas and approaches

Monitor-evaluator: Evaluate options

Specialist: Provide specialised skills

Each team role is associated with typical behavioural and interpersonal strengths.

When a team is performing at its best, each team member has clear responsibilities. Every role needed to achieve the team's goal is fully and well performed. A team often however, fall short of its full potential in spite of having clear responsibilities and roles
Some members do not complete what you expect them to complete.; others can be rather inflexible, causing things to be neglected; members valued for their expert may miss out some steps or tasks; disagreements may occur, causing one member to be frustrated.
Similar styles of behaviour amongst members can cause the team to become unbalanced. Similar weaknesses amongst members results in the team having the same weakness.
